Algebraic Statements Example of an expression is: 5x + 5 Example of an equation is 3x + 4 = 10 Example of an inequality: 3x – 2 < 13

Translating English to Math Why? Mathematical modeling is so crucial to anyone faced with a problem solving situation? Here are two examples: Questions that may be interesting to teenagers. There is a nice 55 inch flat screen that I want; how much do I have to save each month for 5 months in order to buy the $ television? My hourly wage is 7.25 per hour, how many hours do I have to work in order make a gross pay of $184.87?

Translating English to Math Why? (continued) If we can develop equations and expressions for different situations, then we can write programs to help us solve problems quicker and with more accuracy. In the field of meteorology, they input data into a computer model, this model produces predictions in weather patterns. ( computer model  collection of mathematical formulas or rules that produce a result)

Translating English to Math Questions that teenagers may think are boring: At a certain college, the price of attending is approximately $27,000. If there is a yearly 3% increase in tuition, how much will college cost in 3 years?

Translating English to Math How ? Look for words that represent our 4 operations and use variables to represent unknowns. Create an expression or an equation When necessary, solve the equation. (Sometimes test makers request you to create the equation and not to solve the problem

Easy Example You make $7.00 per hour and currently you have $ in the bank. Assuming that you save all your earnings, and no taxes are taken from your check, write an equation representing the Total amount saved. S = $7.00h + $150 where “S” represents the savings and h represents the total hours worked.

Boring topic for Some! How do we make it more exciting? Twp possible solution are: Create your own mathematical situations that are exciting to you. Then create expressions to represent your area of interests If you personalize something, you are less likely to forget it. We still can’t ignore the traditional problems contained in textbooks!
