Paraphrasing When to do it: – When you can state more clearly or concisely what a source says – When your argument depends on details but on the specific words – When the information is just factual- this shows that you understand it and can put it in your own words

Direct Quotes When to use them: – They are extremely original and you couldn’t possibly put them in your own words without it losing meaning – The words are evidence that back up your thesis – The words are from an authority that back up your thesis – When the words are compelling and have meaning

Citations When to cite: – Whenever you use a direct quote – Whenever you paraphrase and use: Specific details like statistics or descriptions of people, places, or events Any evidence that differs from other sources or is not found in all sources See pg. 24 of FRP Packet for what citations look like
