Twelve Points that Show Christianity is True 1. Truth about reality is knowable. 2. The opposite of true is false. 3. It is true that the theistic God exists. 4. If God exists then miracles are possible. 5. Miracles can be used to confirm a message from God. 6. The New Testament is historically reliable. 7. The New Testament says Jesus claimed to be God. 8. Jesus’ claim to be God was miraculously confirmed by: a. His fulfillment of many prophecies about Himself; b. His sinless and miraculous life; c. His prediction and accomplishment of His resurrection 9. Therefore, Jesus is God. 10. Whatever Jesus (who is God) teaches is true. 11. Jesus taught that the Bible is the Word of God. 12. Therefore, it is true that the Bible is the Word of God (and anything opposed to it is false).

Five Lines of Evidence 1. Second Law of thermodynamics 2.Universe expanding 3.Radiation echo 4. General theory of relativity 5. Energy in outer space 1. Second Law of thermodynamics 2.Universe expanding 3.Radiation echo 4. General theory of relativity 5. Energy in outer space

Evidence 1: Second Law of Thermodynamics “Once hydrogen has been burned within that star and converted to heavier elemen t s, it can never be restored to its original state. Minute by minute and year by year, as hydrogen is used up in stars, the supply of this element in the universe grows smaller” ( Jastrow, GA, )

UNUSABLE ENERGY

Note: If the universe is running out of useable energy, then it must have had a beginning (since it is not possible to run out of an infinite amount of energy).

Evidence 2: Expanding Universe "He [Alan Sandage] compiled information on 42 galaxies, ranging out in space as far as six billion light years from us. His measurements indicate that the Universe was expanding more rapidly in the past than it is today. This result lends further support to the belief that the Universe exploded into being” (Jastrow, GA, 95).

Evidence 3: Radiation Echo "No explanation other than the big bang has been found for the fireball radiation. The clincher, which has convinced almost the last doubting Thomas, is that the radiation discovered by Penzias and Wilson has exactly the pattern of wavelengths expected for the light and heat produced in a great explosion. Supporters of the Steady State theory have tried desperately to find an alternative explanation, but they have failed" (Jastrow GA, 15).

Evidence 4: General Relativity Einstein argued that “There is no such thing as an empty space, i.e., a space without a field. Space-time does not claim existence on its own, but only as a structural quality of the field” (in Heeren, SMG, 93). But matter exploded into being. Thus, time must have had a beginning. Space-time does not claim existence on its own, but only as a structural quality of the field” (in Heeren, SMG, 93). But matter exploded into being. Thus, time must have had a beginning.

Einstein’s “Fudge Factor” Being a pantheist (& naturalist), Einstein tried to reject a beginning by introducing a "fudge factor" in his equation to avoid a beginning of the universe. However, he later admitted his error and spoke of his desire "to know how God created the universe." He said, "I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His [God's] thought, the rest are details" (in Heeren, Show Me God, 84, 109). I want to know His [God's] thought, the rest are details" (in Heeren, Show Me God, 84, 109).

Evidence 5: Great Mass of Energy Discovered The Hubble Space Telescope (1992) found a great mass of matter predicted by the Big Bang theory. "By peering back into the beginning of time, a satellite finds the largest and oldest structure ever observed-- evidence of how the universe took shape 15 billion years ago" One scientist exclaimed, "It's like looking at God" ( Time, May 4, 1993, 62, emphasis added).

The Conclusion: The physical universe had a beginning!

But-- Everything that had a beginning had a cause. Hence, the universe had a Cause. And the Cause of the natural world must be Supernatural. Therefore, there is a Supernatural Cause (i.e., God). Everything that had a beginning had a cause. Hence, the universe had a Cause. And the Cause of the natural world must be Supernatural. Therefore, there is a Supernatural Cause (i.e., God).

Astronomer Victor J. Stenger "The universe exploded out of nothingness" ( Free Inquiry, Winter , 13). Note: But what caused the explosion? “Nothing comes from nothing; nothing ever could!” "The universe exploded out of nothingness" ( Free Inquiry, Winter , 13). Note: But what caused the explosion? “Nothing comes from nothing; nothing ever could!”

The Testimony of Scientists Edmund Whittaker: "It is simpler to postulate creation ex nihilo--divine will constituting nature from nothingness" (cited by Jastrow, God and the Astronomers, 111).

An Agnostic Astronomer Robert Jastrow: “Now we see how the astronomical evidence leads to a biblical view of the origin of the world. The details differ, but the essential elements in the astronomical and biblical accounts of genesis are the same: the chain of events leading to man commence suddenly and sharply at a definite moment in time, in a flash of light and energy" (God and the Astronomers, 14).

Science Ends with a Beginning "The scientists pursuit of the past ends in the moment of creation. This is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but theologians. They have always accepted the theologians word of the Bible: `In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth'" (Jastrow,GA, 115).

Science Proves a Supernatural Cause "Astronomers now find that they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation.... And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover" (Jastrow CT, 15). Science Proves a Supernatural Cause "Astronomers now find that they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation.... And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover" (Jastrow CT, 15).

Science Proves a Supernatural Cause Jatrow: "That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact" (cited in CT, 15, 18).

Science Leads to God “In the beginning God….” But if God, then miracles!

Did David Hume Prove Miracles are Impossible? David Hume’s Argument: 1. Natural Law is by definition a description of a regular occurrence. 2. A miracle is by definition a rare occurrence. 3. The evidence for the regular is always greater than that for the rare. 4. A wise person always bases his belief on the greater evidence. 5. Therefore, a wise person should never believe in miracles.

A Response to David Hume 1. It does not deny the possibility of miracles; it only addresses the credibility of miracles. 2. If valid, it proves too much. It would mean we should not believe in a miracle even if one actually occurred! 3. The argument is not sound since the third premise is false. 1. It does not deny the possibility of miracles; it only addresses the credibility of miracles. 2. If valid, it proves too much. It would mean we should not believe in a miracle even if one actually occurred! 3. The argument is not sound since the third premise is false.

David Hume’s Argument has a False Premise David Hume’s Argument: 1. Natural Law is by definition a description of a regular occurrence. 2. A miracle is by definition a rare occurrence. 3.The evidence for the regular is always greater than that for the rare (=false). 4. A wise person always bases his belief on the greater evidence. 5. Therefore, a wise person should never believe in miracles. David Hume’s Argument: 1. Natural Law is by definition a description of a regular occurrence. 2. A miracle is by definition a rare occurrence. 3.The evidence for the regular is always greater than that for the rare (=false). 4. A wise person always bases his belief on the greater evidence. 5. Therefore, a wise person should never believe in miracles.

The Answer to Hume’s Objection The evidence for the regular is not always greater than that for the rare. Examples from Hume’s own world view: 1. The origin of the universe is not a regular event. 2. The origin of life on earth does not occur regularly. 3. Macroevolution has not be repeated. 4. The entire history of the earth happened only once. The evidence for the regular is not always greater than that for the rare. Examples from Hume’s own world view: 1. The origin of the universe is not a regular event. 2. The origin of life on earth does not occur regularly. 3. Macroevolution has not be repeated. 4. The entire history of the earth happened only once.

Harvard’s Richard Lewontin “We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs… because we have a prior commitment to materialism. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a materialistic explanation of the phenomenal world but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes…. Moreover that materialism is absolute for we cannot allow a divine foot in the door” ( New York Review of Books, 1/9/96).
