Organizing Your Writing PART 3 – Body and Conclusion

Before we start let’s review What are the two parts of a thesis? AArgument RReasons to back up your argument For this assignment how many “reasons” do you have [Similarities / differences]? 44

The Body The body should consist of at least 1 paragraph per thesis reason, and provides evidence to support the opinion offered in the thesis statement Each paragraph is based on ONE solid reason to back your thesis statement. The order of the reasons in your thesis dictate the order of your body paragraphs What else do you need? How can you get 6-10 sentences in a body paragraph? –Topic Sentence –Explanation –Examples

For this essay How many body paragraphs will you have? 3 - 5

Topic Sentence A topic sentence states what that specific paragraph is about. DO NOT write sentences like: –This paragraph is going to be about –In this paragraph I am going to talk about –Or anything similar

Give me an example of a topic sentence for a paragraph about balloons

LET’S WRITE! Start with your topic sentence Check and re check what order your paragraphs are supposed to be in [look at your thesis] Explain/elaborate on your subject EXAMPLES!

To Conclude Restate your thesis or focus statement –Not word for word – rework it to be original Summarize the main points: The conclusion enables your reader to recall the main points of your position. In order to do this you can paraphrase the main points of your argument. Write a personal comment or call for action. Let’s go through some!

END WITH… A Prediction: This can be used with a narrative or a cause and effect discussion. The conclusion may suggest or predict what the results may or may not be in the situation discussed

END WITH… a Question: Closing with a question lets your readers make their own predictions, draw their own conclusions; however it still has to be directly related to the topic and sound final.

END WITH… Recommendations: A recommendations closing is one that stresses the actions or remedies that should be taken.

END WITH… A Quotation: Since a quotation may summarize, predict, question, or call for action, you may use a quotation within a conclusion for nearly any kind of paper.

OK, what are you waiting for? WRITE YOUR CONCLUSION!
