The NMC Code for Nurses & Midwives

“While you can interpret the values and principles set out in the Code in a range of different practice settings, they are not negotiable or discretionary” NMC 2015

Four themes brought together in one Code O Together they signify good nursing and midwifery practice.

NURSING &MIDWIFERY COUNCIL Role & Responsibility is to: Protect the public through professional standards and maintaining the register O Their role is to set the standards in the Code, O These are the standards that patients and members of the public have advised the NMC they expect from healthcare professionals. O They are the standards shown every day by good nurses and midwives across the UK. O Dealing with misconduct and lack of competence O Quality assurance of education O Setting standards and providing guidance for LSAs O (for midwifery supervision)

22. Fulfil all registration requirements O To achieve this, you must: 22.1 meet any reasonable requests so we can oversee the registration process 22.2 keep to our prescribed hours of practice and carry out continuing professional development activities, and 22.3 keep your knowledge and skills up to date, taking part in appropriate and regular learning and professional development activities that aim to maintain and develop your competence and improve your performance.

The NMC Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives O The Code is the foundation of good nursing and midwifery practice, and a key tool in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public O Make the care of people your first concern O Keep clear and accurate records O Be open and honest, act with integrity and uphold the reputation of your profession O You must give a constructive and honest response to anyone who complains about the care they have received O You must cooperate with internal and external investigations.

Current Requirements for renewal of registration Annually O Payment of the renewal of registration fee O Submission of your Intention to Practice Form (ITP) Every three years O You sign a Notification of Practice (NoP) form to declare that you have met the Prep requirements i.e. O You must have worked in some capacity by virtue of your midwifery qualification during the previous three years for a minimum of 450 hours, or have successfully undertaken an approved return to practice course within the last three years. O You must have undertaken and recorded your continuing professional development (CPD) over the three years prior to the renewal of your registration. O And are of good health and good character. O Once the NMC has received and processed your completed and signed form, together with your fee payment then your registration is renewed

From December 2015 O The pilots started in January 2015 and will last 6 months in NI this is WHSCT O The purpose of revalidation is unchanged i.e. to improve public protection by making sure that you continue to remain fit to practise throughout your career.

What the NMC says…. Revalidation will encourage you O to seek feedback from patients and colleagues, O reflect upon the Code by having a professional discussion with another registrant O seek confirmation that you have met those requirements from a third party. O reinforces the duty on you to maintain your fitness to practise within the scope of your practice and incorporate the Code in your day to day practice and personal development O will encourage engagement in professional networks and discussions, and reduce professional isolation. O will encourage early discussions about practice concerns before they escalate or require referral to NMC, and increasing access and participation in appraisals and professional development. O NMC wants to create an interactive, career-long relationship with you, and increase our understanding of your practice O As a professional, you have a duty to keep your professional knowledge and skills up to date through a continuous process of learning and reflection

The process

How to prepare? O Do you have a portfolio? e.g. NIPEC O Think about how you would evidence of your practice hours? e.g. Keep samples of timesheets, job specifications and role profiles. O Do you have a record of the CPD you have undertaken? O Is it relevant to your scope of practice as a midwife. The NMC do not include mandatory training that is not directly related to your practice (for example, fire training or health and safety training) as part of your 40 hours of CPD O Any mandatory training that is necessary to your scope of practice and professional development (for example, PROMPT; K2), you could include participatory discussion e.g. ALERT /Risk groups

In addition O You must obtain at least five pieces of practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of your registration. O You must record a minimum of five written reflections on the Code, your CPD, and practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of your registration. O You must have a professional development discussion with another NMC registrant, covering your reflections on the Code, your CPD, and practice- related feedback O You must provide a health declaration that ensures you are capable of safe and effective practice without supervision O Be of good character which is based on your conduct, behaviour and attitude!
