Planned happenstance theory is a conceptual framework extending career counseling to include the creating and transforming of unplanned events into opportunities for learning. SO WHAT IS PLANNED HAPPENSTANCE, REALLY?

4 factors influence career development: 1) genetic endowment 2) environmental conditions/events 3) learning experiences 4) task approach skills SO WHAT IS PLANNED HAPPENSTANCE, REALLY?

Counselors who recognize the role of happenstance enable their clients to… Generate Recognize Incorporate …chance events into their career development WHAT CAN COUNSELORS DO?

Build Empathy. Set goals. Brainstorm methods of realizing said goal. Have client set deadlines to avoid procrastination. Follow up with client on goal realization. SAMPLE COUNSELING SESSION

(1)The goal of career counseling is to help clients learn to take actions to achieve more satisfying career and personal lives—not to make a single career decision. (2)Assessments are used to stimulate learning, not to match personal characteristics with occupational characteristics. (3)Clients learn to engage in exploratory actions as a way of generating beneficial unplanned events.
