WHAT IS AN IED? An IED is abbreviated in which it actually means Improvised Explosive Devices, once an IED is detonated it can be extremely destructive. Through many studies it is proved that the IED is the most deadly tactic the Taliban army could possibly have. When and IED is detonated, it can sometimes be a distraction so that the Taliban soldiers can continue with a surprise attack. Soldiers around hole in ground ->

WHAT ARE IED’S MADE OF? There is no specific material used for creating an IED, but there are many common materials used, such as: Chemicals Nails Ball Bearings Motor Rounds Plastic Bottles And Cooking Pots When someone is thinking of creating an IED they are simply looking for materials that have the ability to hurt or kill someone or something that has the strength to blow up a vehicle. Explosion of IED in the background of a soldier ->

IS SIZE A FACTOR WHILE CREATING AN IED? The size of an IED can allow for it to hide in more spontaneous places, such as: Small Boxes Bags And Under Tables Are good places to hide a small IED, whereas: In Hole In Vehicles And In Buildings Are good places to hide a larger IED. Vehicle destroyed by an IED ->

WHY DO TERRORIST WARN AUTHORITIES OF A BOMB? The reason a terrorist informs authorities, such as police, that there is a bomb in a certain area, is because they wish to get their point across to the public without killing a whole lot of people. Warnings can also go terribly wrong, authorities may simply take it as a prank call. An example of the authorities not taking action would be June 15 th 1996, warnings to hospitals, newspapers and radio stations. 3,000lbs and injured 200 people, it was the largest bomb since WW2. Man lying in stretcher after explosion ->

HOW SOPHISTICATED IS AN IED? An IED is only as sophisticated as the people that created it. Some are made very simple such as a “Pipe Bomb.” Others are very high knowledge such as bombs that have booby traps to prevent authorities from disarming it An example of an IED ->

HOW CAN AN IED BE TRIGGERED? IED’s can be triggered in many different ways, depending on how sophisticated the IED actually is. A timer is very common and can be set hours, minutes or days ahead of the actual explosion. This is an advantage for the bomber. The longer an IED is left in place the greater chance of it being found. Remote control detonators. Vehicle after IED ->

WHO USES IED’S? IED’s have been used by terrorists throughout the years, it has been proven to be a weapon that the weak use to defeat the stronger. A women's face after being near an IED ->
