Battleship Maine Feb 1898 Maine was in Cuba. Spain Controlled Cuba, didn’t like US. Cuba wanted to be free. We supported Cuba. Explosion on Maine. Some thought Spain did it, others an accident. 266 Killed. Battle Cry – “Remember the Maine…to Hell with Spain!” US citizens outraged – wanted revenge.

The Explosion on the USS Maine On February 15, 1898, at 9:40 p. m. the Maine sank in Havana Harbor after an explosion, resulting in the deaths of 266 men. The Spanish attributed the event to an internal explosion; but an American inquiry reported that it was caused by a mine. Historians now believe it was caused by old gunpowder being stored on the ship
