Learning How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation A tutorial for novice users

Slide Design Select simple slide design Include important points only Keep points simple Substitute images and/or video clips for text Minimize special effects

Getting Started Open PowerPoint program Program will open with a new title slide Type presentation title and subtitle in text boxes Click to Add Title Click to add subtitle

Inserting Slides To add a new slide: Select INSERT  NEW SLIDE Choose a slide layout from the Slide Layout menu to the right of the screen This menu opens when new slide is inserted

Adding Slide Transitions Slide Transitions Select SLIDE SHOW  CUSTOM ANIMATION A menu will open to the right of the screen Click on down arrow next to CUSTOM ANIMATION in right menu Select SLIDE TRANSITION Scroll through menu choices Select desired choice Click on Custom Animation down arrow then select Slide Transition

Adding Text Transitions Highlight selected text and then… Select SLIDE SHOW  CUSTOM ANIMATION; a menu will open to the right of the screen Select CUSTOM ANIMATION down arrow Select ADD EFFECT down arrow Select from choices (Entrance, Emphasis, Exit, etc.) Scroll through choices Select desired animation Select Custom animation  Add Effect

Inserting Images Place all images in presentation folder named “images” Select slide where images is to be inserted Select INSERT  PICTURE  FROM FILE Select the “images” file and the desired image Click OK

Resizing Images After image has been inserted… Click and drag image to desired location To resize, click on image, and then click and drag a circle located at edge of selected image Click and drag sizing points at edge of image to resize

Creating a Table To create a table… Insert a new slide Select INSERT  TABLE Select correct number of cells and columns Input data Select INSERT  TABLE from menu Then insert number of columns and rows

Running a Slide Show Options for running a slide show: 1. To run from the beginning select SLIDE SHOW  VIEW SHOW from menu OR 2. Select VIEW  SLIDE SHOW 3. To test a slide or begin in the slow at a specific point, select the slide icon at the bottom left hand corner Select Slide Show icon in bottom left corner

A few more slide show viewing hints… To stop a slide show, click ESC To find a particular slide in the show… go to VIEW  SLIDE SORTER Double click desired slide, then click slide show icon To hide a slide during a show… Place designated slide on screen in edit view Select SLIDE SHOW  HIDE SLIDE Test slide by playing slide show

Right Mouse Click Hints During slide show, use right mouse button to … Make arrow always visible Go to previous slide Select a specific slide in the slide show out of sequence Select GO  BY TITLE Or Select GO  SLIDE NAVIGATOR

Printing Slide Show Handouts… Select Print Click “Color/grayscale” Select black and white Under “Print What,” select HANDOUTS 3 per page provides lines for notes

Transforming PowerPoint to Web Page Select FILE  Save AS Select SAVE AS TYPE box Scroll down to Web Page (HTM., HTML) Name file Save *Caution, not all Web browsers will show PowerPoint html shows due to new security measures
