Weather Forecasting  Meteorologist are scientists who study the causes of weather and try to predict it.  Meteorologist use maps, charts, and computers to analyze weather data to prepare weather forecasts. They often use radar to track areas of rain or snow and to locate severe storms such as tornadoes.  Most weather information comes from the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service uses balloons, satellites, radar, and surface instruments to gather weather data.  Meteorologist are scientists who study the causes of weather and try to predict it.  Meteorologist use maps, charts, and computers to analyze weather data to prepare weather forecasts. Weather Technology  Technological improvements in gathering weather data and using computers have improved the accuracy of weather forecasts.

Weather Balloons  Weather Balloons carry instruments high into the troposphere and lower stratosphere. Remember that these are the two lowest layers of the atmosphere. The instruments measure temperature, air pressure, and humidity.

Computer Forecasts  Computers are widely used to help forecast weather. Instruments can now gather large amounts of data, including temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed and direction. Computers process such information quickly to help forecasters make predictions.

Reading Weather Maps  A weather map is a “snapshot” of conditions at a particular time over a large area.  There are many types of weather maps. The atmosphere works in such a way that a small change in the weather today can mean a larger change in the the weather a week later.
