You will be working in pairs You need a pen each You will be completing a number of tasks – the team with the most points overall will win Any outstanding performances from pairs or individuals will also be rewarded Any negative behaviour will result in penalties

Search Engines How many search engines can you name? Google Ask Jeeves Yahoo (Altavista) Bing

Search Engines Google is the most popular, so we will use that one today What is the difference between these addresses? Extensions: show they type or location of a website

Search Engines What is the difference between these searches? Great Wall of China great wall of china

Search Engines What is the difference between these searches? Great Wall of China “ Great Wall of China ”

Search Engines How might this search be improved? Where can I find information about the Great Wall of China? Information Great Wall China

Search Engines You can also use operators to improve your search OR Finds either search word e.g. world cup winners 2002 OR 2006 Would find web pages with either world cup winners in 2002 or world cup winners in 2006 on them Operator: joins two search terms together Must be written in CAPITALS Operator: joins two search terms together Must be written in CAPITALS

Search Engines You can also use operators to improve your search AND Finds both search words e.g. world cup AND winners Would only find web pages with both world cup AND winners Google already uses AND in every search, so it isn’t needed, but you may use it in other search engines Operator: joins two search terms together Must be written in CAPITALS Operator: joins two search terms together Must be written in CAPITALS

Search Engines Clever things to do in Google: define: precipitation – finds dictionary definitions 4lbs in kg – converts measurements square root 125 – does the calculation 10 pounds in euros – converts money weather madrid – finds the weather report

Search Engines Over to you… In your pairs: Take a sheet and write your names at the top When you have completed the questions, hand it to your teacher Each correct answer wins a point for your team

Copyright What is copyright? The law which protects work from being copied When is something copyrighted? As soon as it is created (‘viable’) Are text, images and other resources on the internet copyrighted? Yes – unless it specifically says the author surrenders their copyright

Copyright How do you breach copyright? Pretend someone else’s work is your own If you do that at school, what is it called? Plagiarism Includes copying from books, the internet and other people

Copyright If you breach copyright and the author wants to take action, what could happen? Taken to court: Stopped from publishing/broadcasting it Hand over all copies to courts Hand over all profits Pay damages to the author Recent example: "The Harry Potter Lexicon" JK Rowling Vs Stephen Vander Ark

Sources of Information and Copyright Over to you… In your pairs: Take a sheet and write your names at the top When you have completed the questions, hand it to your teacher Each correct answer wins a point for your team

Can We Trust It? How reliable is information from the internet? Whenever you find information on the internet, you have to decide whether to trust it There are some questions which you can use…

Can We Trust It? Who wrote it? Is this person to be trusted? Are they an expert? Do they represent a company or organization? Are they biased? Are they promoting a product? Who pays them? Do they have an opinion to promote? Is it up to date? When was the site written? Has it been updated? Is it out of date? Is it based on facts? Does it back up statements with facts? Is it personal opinions?

Can We Trust It? The big question… For: large base of writers, they check their own entries after updates, tapping into collective knowledge, checked by many people, kept up-to-date Against: permanent work in progress, open for entries from misinformed people, mischievous incorrect entries Wikipedia

Information Treasure Hunt We have discussed a lot about information In your pairs, you will now do a treasure hunt using everything you have learned The treasure you will be hunting will be INFORMATION
