Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities ‘NISP Means Business’ GTBN Dartmouth Presentation 27 th April 2010 Pat Hudson Practitioner, NISP South West
Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities What is Industrial Symbiosis? Industrial symbiosis engages traditionally separate industries and other organizations in a network to foster innovative strategies for more sustainable resource use (including materials, energy, water, assets, expertise, logistics, etc) Through the network, business opportunities are identified leading to mutually profitable transactions for - innovative sourcing of required inputs and - value added destinations for non-product outputs + Exposure to best practice/knowledge transfer
Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities Industrial Symbiosis for a circular economy Natural resources Products Waste (to disposal) Linear system Circular system Products Waste to resource Natural resources Natural resources Products Waste to resource

Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities NISP South West Current Figures… Metrics… April 2005 – CurrentDelivery Landfill Diversion (tonnes)1.2 Million CO 2 Reduction (tonnes)871,823 Hazardous Waste Eliminated (tonnes)1,447 Virgin Material Saved (tonnes)999,594 Additional Sales (£’s)17.2 Million Cost Savings (£’s)12.4 Million
Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities Types of CO 2 Emissions Savings Input savings – lower embedded energy in recycled materials than virgin raw materials to be processed Process savings – savings in gas, electricity or other fuel use by one of synergy partners Fuel substitution- replacing fossil fuels with other fuel sources Transport savings – reduction in transport directly associated with synergy Disposal savings – reduction in biodegradable material sent to landfill
Connecting Industry – Creating Opportunities Energy From Pastry Waste Andigestion & Apetito Apetito approached NISP with problem. 1,700 tonnes of pastry waste going to landfill Andigestion use waste to generate electricity on site Cost savings and increased revenue for both companies CO2 Reduction of 6,842 tonnes “The connection with NISP has directly led to Apetito reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and has save the company a significant amount of money” MARK LOVETT – HS&E Manager
