The Iroquois in New York State David Shuman

INTRODUCTION The Iroquois were one of the two largest groups of Native Americans that lived in what is now present day New York. They had there own culture, traditions, celebrations and competitions. Many of the places you visit in Central New York were once inhabited by Iroquois nations.

TASK You are a 12 year old Iroquois child living in New York State in the early 1700s and you have been mysteriously transported to present day New York State. You must describe to a group of fourth graders what your culture and lifestyle were like back in your time period.

PROCESS 1.You must use the information on the resources slide to investigate and collect information about the Iroquois lifestyle and culture. 2.For each website you will be required to complete a set of Cornell Notes with the title of the website on top of the page.

PROCESS 3.Information that you should be collecting when taking notes should answer the questions: What type of shelter did they live in? What did they eat or farm? What did they wear? What did they celebrate? What was their religious views? What games did they play? What are the names of the five nations of the Iroquois League?

PROCESS 4. When you have completed your Cornell Notes for each website please continue on to the evaluation page

EVALUATION Your group is required to hand in a copy of your Cornell Notes for each website. The name of the website and each members name is required on each page of notes. Each individual is required to write a five paragraph essay describing three of the following: Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, shelter, celebrations,religious views, games or farming and nutrition.
