WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?

By definition, the word “Christian” means “a follower of Christ”.

By concept, a follower is one who walks in the footsteps of his leader.

Therefore, a Christian is one who walks in the footsteps of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21)

1 Pet 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps”

The word Christian is used only three times in the New Testament Acts 11:26 Acts 26:28 1 Pet 4:16

Acts 11:26 “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch Acts 11:26 “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch”

Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian”

1 Pet 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf”

Acts 11:26

At Antioch, many had been taught the word and had “turned unto the Lord” (Acts 11:21)

Acts 11:21 “And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord”

Acts 26:28

Paul is preaching the word to King Agrippa concerning what he did to become a Christian and about the church (Acts 26:1-23)

Acts 26:1-27 …from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest”

Agrippa’s response to Paul’s lesson is that Paul had almost persuaded him to be a Christian (Acts 26:28)

Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian”

Agrippa recognized what Paul was and understood what Paul had done to become a Christian. He was not ready to become One.

What did Paul do? In Acts 9, after listening to the teaching of Ananias, Paul responded to this teaching by being baptized into Christ (Acts 9:18; cf. Acts 22:12-16)

Acts 9:18 “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized”

1 Pet 4:16

1 Pet 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf”

Who were these people?

They were the elect (1 Peter 1:2)

1 Pet 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied”

1 Pet 1:22 “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently”

They were a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5)

1 Pet 2:5 “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ”

They were a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5)

1 Pet 2:5 “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ”

They were a chosen generation (“chosen, favorite, elect”) (1 Peter 2:9) (“chosen, favorite, elect”)

1 Pet 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”

“peculiar” – Grk Lex 4047 peripoiesis {per-ee-poy'-ay-sis} - purchased possession, a preserving, a preservation, possession, one's own property, an obtaining

They were a changed people (1 Peter 4:1-4)

1 Pet 4:1-4 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he…

1 Pet 4:1-4 …no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in…

1 Pet 4:1-4 …lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you”

1 Pet 5:6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time”
