Iago’s soliloquy quotations By Anna and Nikki

“I play the villian” This quote by Iago is used to speak to the audience so they are aware of his plan. Also that it shows Iago confessing to himself that he is evil.

“All seals and symbols of redeemed sin” Used as sacrificial imagery. This quote is used to speak about forgiveness of the “redeemed sin.” Symbols such as the cross is used that belong to the Christian religion, is believed that the sin’s have been forgiven by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This is shown that Iago believes that he will be forgiven of his sins.

“Her appetite shall play the god/with his weak function” This quote is showing Iago’s plan to the audience by stating that Iago will use Desdemona’s sexual appetite to play the “god” meaning the head of the plan. This is used to head the plan to work at Othello’s weakest function which is not being intelligent and his inexperience of being in love.

“Divinity of Hell!” When Iago blurts out “Divinity of Hell!” it is used as a speech directly from Satan. This could show that Satan could be guiding Iago in the play using the ‘theology of hell.’

“When Devils with..As I do now” “When devils with the blackest sins put on, They do suggest at first with heavenly shows, As I do now.” This quote comes directly after Iago outbreak of “Divinity of Hell!” These quotes are suggesting devil’s are being used in Iago’s plan. This quote suggests to the audience that what Iago is doing is a perfect expression of Satan’s actions.

“I will turn her virtue into pitch” This quote explains that Iago is going to use Desdemona in his plan. Iago shows no respect for woman in the play so Iago use’s Desdemona in his plan to get at Othello. Iago’s plan is to turn Desdemona’s “virtue” which is imagery of white innocence into “pitch” which is generally a foul smelling, black substance such as black tar.
