Aim/learning outcome Know about personal career goals Understand opportunities for training and work

By the end of the session you will be able to: Investigate potential career goals Describe next steps to achieve personal goals Identify barriers to achieving personal goals Identify sources of information for training or employment List training opportunities Outline employment options `

Personal career goals It is useful to think about what you might like to do next. In this unit, you will need to think about what you could do next and how you could go about it.

What do you like doing? A good starting point is to think about what type of work you enjoy doing. On this course, we have been looking at children. Begin by thinking if you have enjoyed learning about children. Class discussion- 10 minutes

Possible careers Working in a school- Teacher Teaching Assistant Midday supervisor Special needs assistant Working in a pre-school- pre-school leader Pre-school worker Special needs co- ordinator (SENCO)

Working in a nursery- Manager Nursery Nurse SENCO Working in a home setting- Child minder Nanny After school/holiday club- Manager Play worker Working with older children- Play worker Youth worker

What are your next steps? Your next step will be to find out more about your career choice. Once you have researched your choice, you will know what training, skills and experience you need to peruse that goal.

Some examples “I want to help children with special needs. I need to work on my reading and writing” “I want to be a nanny. I need to go back to college to get another qualification” “I want to work in a pre-school. I need to improve my English” “I want to be a midday supervisor. I need to do a food hygiene course”

Over to you Choose 3 career goals each, for example, ‘Teaching assistant’. Then outline what you would need to do to achieve that goal (also known as next steps).

Barriers Barrier? See it, think it.. How might the barriers described below get in the way? “I have a baby to look after. I cannot go to college” “I need to earn money while I am learning” “I am scared that everyone will laugh at me” “I don’t like trying out new things”

Common barriers

Opportunities for training and work Once you have begun to think about your career goal, you need to get more advice. Where can we get advice and information from?

Job centre- you can find out what jobs there are and get advice Tutor- They will be able to tell you about training opportunities and can give advice about your career. Career advisors- These are people who give advice and information about careers. Connexions advisors- This is an advice service for young people. You can talk to an advisor on the phone or go in the centre. Websites- There are some websites for young people and adults that give information about training and career advice

Websites www.gov.uk/jobsearch To see what jobs there are https://www.gov.uk/browse/employing-people Connexions website: Look up advice for young people or find a Connexions advisor. This information is now provided through Directgov. https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/Pages/Home.aspx Careers advice

Training opportunities Short courses Short courses may be over a day or a week. Short courses often give you particular knowledge or skills. Example of short courses include First Aid, Food Hygiene and Manual Handling. Apprenticeships It is possible to work with children and train at the same time. You would learn on the job and also study at home. Apprenticeships work well if you are a hard worker. You have to study hard as well as work hard.

Part time If you need money, you might find a job and study part time or in the evenings. It might take you longer to get your qualification this way. Full time Some courses are full time. You would probably study in a group at college. As part of your course, you may go on work experience.

Distance learning This means learning at home. You could be given things to do each week or month. Most distance learning courses are done through the internet. You send work in and get information via the internet. Distance learning works well if you are very motivated and good at working alone.

Employment options This will depend on your qualifications and work experience. Your attitude and how hard you work will also be important. Give me some employment options

Guess what!!!! Volunteering can be a good way of getting a training place as well as work experience.

Check learning 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 “I am not sure what to do with my life. I am 16 years old, I like working with children, but I have not got any qualifications. I have done some babysitting. I think it might be good to work with children in a home setting” Any suggestions? 2.1 Odd one out! All but one of these could give you information about training or employment. Which is the odd one out? Job centre Call centre Careers advisor Connexions advisor

2. 2, 2. 3 Write down 1 training option and 1 employment option 2 2.2, 2.3 Write down 1 training option and 1 employment option 2.3 Match up Special needs assistant Play worker Midday supervisor Pre-school worker I work with children in a local playgroup I work with children in an afterschool club I work with children who need extra support to learn I work with children at lunch times I work with children in a local playgroup I work with children in a local playgroup
