Show Them How To Do It: using Macromedia Captivate to deliver remote demonstrations Sally Patalong and Olivia Llewellyn Coventry University Lilac 2006, University of Leeds

The Project 500+ business students requiring information literacy instruction Topic: Starting your own business No real history of information literacy training for business school students

How to deliver the sessions? Two lecture theatre slots? Twelve small groups – ethical concerns some students disadvantaged Face-to-face training and hands-on method preferred

Reasons for using Captivate Good quality demonstrations Can reach very large numbers Gives library a ‘presence’ through the voice Back up optional tutorial sessions

Macromedia Captivate Simple to use Action on screen recorded Simultaneous commentary Easy to edit both action and commentary Need to practice and prepare script in advance Keep tutorials ‘bite sized’ and simple

Disadvantages No face-to-face help available while viewing tutorials No hands-on element – doesn’t suit everyone's learning style Need computer with sound/headphones

Advantages Can reach large numbers of students Can be viewed repeatedly and on demand Students can be off-campus Tutorials are concise Students can see the relevance of training Raises profile of the library with staff and students (technical competency)

Reasons for Disappointing Results? Lecturer left it too late to introduce the tutorials They were buried under the resources icon The students were left to use them by themselves The announcement area tends to be cluttered Students were given information that we knew nothing about

Course Genie Converts Word documents into online course materials oursegenie/

We learned that: The well illustrated, written handout has its place Online material needs to be obvious and easily accessible Timing, as ever, is all Explore all the other material available on a module web – you may not like what you find! Today’s material goes out of date quickly – an animated tutorial with narration takes a lot more work to update it than a word document does We need to consider what value we are adding

Having said that: Captivate is easy to use – and fun! It can produce simulations as well as narrations Looks professional The fun element encourages people to think of other ways to use it e.g. inductions Adds a personal note for distance learners
