WSRP in Higher Education: a Progress Report Joint Information Systems Committee King’s College London | 18 July 2005 Jim Farmer, Sakai Community Liaison instructional media + magic, inc.

Web Services Remote Portlet The technology The WSRP 2.0 specification should be ratified late The specification includes new inter-portlet communication capabilities needed for e- Learning and e-Research applications: Consumer mediated coordination: Event distribution Producer mediated sharing The specification provides guidance on the implementation of security using WS- Security.

Web Services Remote Portlet Technical Committee guidance The 2.0 specification removes some ambiguity of the 1.0 specification. Use the Apache Software Foundation’s WSRP4J only as a basis for further development. (See WSRP4J contribution) uPortal/Sakai suggestions for WSRP4J are similar, if not identical, to recommendations from other implementers. The WSRP Technical Committee is available for guidance. Meeting with WSRP Technical Committee Chair Rich Thompson, Apache Software Foundation WSRP4J Committer Julie McNaught at Yale University, May 2005.

Web Services Remote Portlet Contribution to WSRP4J Use of IoC components Flexible persistence layer Flexible logging Configuration error handling Configurable properties location Support of latest Axis release (SOAP implementation) Separation of WSRP Consumer and Producer code and possible generalized container (now Pluto) ________________________________________________ WSRP Plugin for Web pages Michael Ivanov, 11 May 2005
