What is History? Study of the past. Specifically, study of present traces of the past. Record of past chronological and significant events of an institution, a country or the world and it usually includes the explanation and the causes of such events,on the basis of currently existing evidence.

History of History When did History start? It could be stated that it began 2.5 million years ago. This is when the first written evidence and actual proof of human history started. But the science and study of history has no exact, real date. Many men and women had studied the past in the past. And, many of them had made important findings; still, the creation of the study and science of history has no date.

History of History With the rise of new technologies, historians have been able to dig deeper into history. Still, there is no existence of history’s history timeline. Therefore, we are only left with the divisions of all the history of the world: -The human race, of life, and some others (over the years, new classifications and divisions have been made).

Why Study History? The study of history can be justified on the gorunds that: 1. It gives us a sense of identity. 2. Is a defense against propaganda. 3. Enriches our understanding of human nature We can understand both the past and ourselves better if we study history, than if we choose to ignore it.

Why Study History? To understand the present, we should study the past to learn from our mistakes. The study of history can give us something all together like a good judgement of human affairs.

Problems Too Little Evidence:Too Little Evidence: Studying the distant past’s little evidence can make us misinterpret the evidence that exists and jump to conclusions that are not justified by it. Too Much Evidence:Too Much Evidence: Ex. If you were to write a definitive history of the world for the year You would be overwhelmed by the extense amouint of evidence from newpapers, TV and internet.

Problems It can be biased:It can be biased: -Due to a historian’s current preoccupations, prejudices, personal beliefs or interests which can influence his research by making it subjective rather than objective. History is concerned with the past and one obvious problem with trying to know the past is that it no longer exists.

Eye- WitnessActivity

A historian takes interest in your school. They want to seek from you, as eye-witness and participant, first-hand info. about this past and present year. Before you respond to the following questions, you must first (in small groups)…

1. Identify a class public event in your school that occurred within recent weeks. -It could be a meeting, performance, dance or event, involving the public or anything where most of you participated..

What were the most striking characteristics of the public event that you can identify?

What would you consider the 5 most important events in your school this PAST and PRESENT year?

What do you consider to be the 3 most important things which the SENIORS 2010 have gained from its time so far in school?

One of the researchers asks you how you think he can best gain information on the events, culture, and ambience of this past (08-09) and present (09- 10) school years. What would you recommend?

Eye-Witness Activitty Who do you think is the best qualified to write a history of your school: a graduate, teacher, member of school board, parent or local journalist? Why? Would someone else be better? Why?
