The Cherokees Vanessa Blinn, 10/14/09, period 4

About the Cherokees The name of my tribe is the Cherokees. They are a Native American tribe from the southeastern United States. Cherokees is pronounced chair-uh-keys En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokees

Organization The are three recognized Cherokees tribes. -The Cherokee nation of Oklahoma. -The United Keetoowah Band in Oklahoma -The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina Eastern Cherokee people live on reservations. Oklahoma Cherokee people live on trust land. Keetoowah Cherokee people don’t have a land.

Language They Speak. Most speak English, but some speak Cherokee Indian Language.

Past Culture Cherokee’s main weapon was the arrowhead which they made from different kinds of stones, but they considered flint the best stone. The Cherokees had a Miss Cherokee and which she served as the goodwill ambassador for the tribe. Medicine people for the Cherokee travel to the rock caves to meet with the Little People and share in their secrets. »

Cherokees Peoples’ Rules and Religion. The Cherokees had an even separation between the men and women. Cherokee men had the jobs of hunting, war, and diplomacy. Cherokee women had the job of farming, property, and family.

The Tribe’s Character The Cherokees were considered peaceful and helpful in many ways.

Additional Facts Cherokee men wore breechcloths and leggings and Cherokee women wore wraparound skirts and poncho- style blouses made out of deerskin. The Cherokees built their own long dugout canoes from logs.
