The Writing Skill

Writing is a vital productive skill for speakers of a foreign language and for everyone using his own first language

How to teach Writing? Teaching writing starts by: the ‘nuts and bolts’ aspects of literacy The process approach adapted for writing

The ‘nuts and bolts’ This includes :  Handwriting It should be clear and legible.  Spelling It should be improved by extensive reading.  Lay-out and Mechanics Learners should follow the conventional formats and know how to use punctuation marks and capitalization properly.

The process Approach to writing It involves various stages: 1. Prewriting / Discussing / Brainstorming 1. Writing / Drafting 1. Revising / Editing 1. Publishing

Prewriting SOURCES OF INSPIRATION - How do I get ideas in the first place? Books, CDs, magazines, conduct interviews, dreams, role-playing, brainstorming and discussion….etc. Use prewriting strategies : Graphic organizers are brainstorming webs, mind maps, charts and others…

Writing It consists of writing a draft Including the best ideas that relate to the topic Making sure it includes enough content and ideas Ensuring a good organization and development of ideas

Revising Revising is... making decisions about how to improve the piece of writing adopting this method: Adding What else does the reader need to know? Rearranging Is the information in the most logical and most effective order? Removing What extra details or unnecessary bits of information are in this piece of writing? Replacing What words or details could be replaced by clearer or stronger expressions?

Editing Editing is... spelling capitalization punctuation grammar sentence structure subject/verb agreement consistent verb tense word usage

Editing Self Edit Read your own work backwards. Read the last sentence, then the second last sentence, etc. Does each sentence make sense when you read it on its own? Do you see or hear any errors in the sentence? Peer Edit
