2 nd – 6 th Rockstars September Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – Our story for the week will be, Lewis and Clark and Me. Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will be learning comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary. This week students will be able to identify the author's purpose of writing a story (to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or to express ideas and feelings). 5th Grade Literacy - Our story for the week will be, Thunder Rose. Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will be learning comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary. This week students will be able to identify the cause and effect of events that occur in a story. The Austin Tracy Academic team will be holding try outs on Friday, Sept. 27th. In order to try out you must be in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade and return the permission form Mrs. Bowen handed out last week. Students will take a multiple choice test when they are in Mrs. Bowen's class. The top 10 scores will make the team. This requires practice after school one day a week starting in October and competitions on Saturdays in February. If you would like to order Austin Tracy Spirit Wear please place your order form in the envelope and send it back to school with your child. These are due no later than Friday, September 27th. September 30 – Open House 2nd Grade Math - My 2nd graders will be working on adding numbers with and without regrouping and solving real-world problems. 3rd Grade Math - My 3rd graders will be working on adding with and without regrouping. 2nd Grade Social Studies - This week we will continue to study the reasons for the creation of the Constitution, recognize the opening words of the Constitution, we will also be able to identify the Bill of Rights. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd graders will begin our study of early explorers. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be taking a test over chapter 2 this week, and will begin to study land formations. 2 nd Grade Literacy This week second grade will begin their first official run-through of the Daily 5. Mrs. Wood and I will be dividing the students into smaller groups for more individualized instruction. The groups are flexible and will switch between the two of us after a period of 4 weeks. I can identify and analyze character and setting to aid in comprehension. 3 rd Grade Literacy I can tell, in order, the main events of a story. I can summarize information in a text. 2nd Grade Science I can explain how rocks become sand. I can explain the effects of weather on rocks. 3rd Grade Science I can understand that animals develop in many ways. I can describe the process of metamorphosis through illustrations and text.

Bowen 5th Grade Science Classes – Students will be studying the reproduction of plants and animals in this chapter. We will be starting plants from propagation and reviewing life cycles. 6th Grade Science Classes – Students will be studying Chapter 10 Chemistry. Be prepared for a lot of interest in this unit of study. Experiments over chemical changes will have students moving and shaking! Language Classes – Students will be looking at the differences in editing and revising this week. Their first writing pieces will be in the editing and revision stages. Math- This week our fourth graders will finish up our estimation unit with problem solving, least and greatest common multiples and working with multiples up to 12. Please continue to work on Multiplication facts and division for practice! Science- In science we are finishing up our unit on living things. We are studying habitats. Your child will bring home information on a habitat project. We will be set to have our test next week! Writer's Workshop With our first major essay behind us, we continue to move forward with our second Narrative. I am excited because this one will be a Mystery paper. We will continue to learn about what makes a narrative essay the best. Daily 5 Literacy Please encourage your children to read at home. The more we read, the more we learn. The more we learn, the more we read. Music With our "Yodeling" behind us, we are moving on to '70's Rock songs this week. Linder Next week in fifth grade math, students will finish up Chapter 2. Please look over the chapter wrap up and the I Can's sent home with your child. On the test students will multiply and divide using patterns, simplify numeric expressions using the order of operations and solve real world problems involving multiplication and division. Encourage your child to practice multiplication facts and don't forget Drops in the bucket 7. Fifth grade social studies will finish up studying exploration of North America. Next, they will learn about the three early English settlements in North America; Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Students will encounter hardships the settlers endured, and the reasons for the success of failure of each settlement. In sixth grade, students will study the Latin country of Mexico. They will get a look at Mexico today and its ever changing economy. We will be exploring fractions, numbers greater than zero and numbers less than zero in our next unit. Students will be working with a variety of manipulatives and technologies. You can check my website for extra activities to help with this concept.
