AP Language and Composition March 7, 2013 Mr. Houghteling “It’s a Therapeutic Thursday!”

Coincidence? “Society is held together by our need; we bind it together with legend, myth, coercion, fearing that without it we will be hurled into that void, within which, like the earth before the Word was spoken, the foundations of society are hidden.” —James Baldwin, taken from dictionaryreference.com as its/their quote of the day.

just in case you didn’t know…

Agenda Reviewing Baldwin using a CLOZE passage: search and find! Finish reading “A Talk to Teachers.” The “Criss-cross” argument.

Still processing your test results… Most likely, we will discuss your test results Monday and Tuesday, if not tomorrow and Monday.

HOMEWORK Prepare the Criss-Cross argument. Collect your evidence and personal experience.

Anticipation Guide 1. The government is the creation of the people. It is responsible to the people, and the people are responsible for it. 2. White people must have brainwashed themselves to believe what they believed. 3. Children—not yet aware that it is dangerous to look too deeply at anything—look at everything, look at each other and draw their own conclusions.

Anticipation Guide 4. Every street boy understands that this structure (churches, government, politics, i.e. society) is operated for someone else’s benefit. 5. The things that happen in the ghetto are criminal because of the way the system is set up to fail them. 6. The educational system in the United States is set up for black kids to fail. 7. Blacks in the American educational system are going to become “schizophrenic.”

Anticipation Guide 8. If one thinks of oneself as an educated person, then one must accept the responsibility to change or question society. 9. The paradox of education is that precisely at the point when you begin to develop a conscience, you must find yourself at war with your society. 10. A parent’s duty is to civilize his/her children.

Anticipation Guide 11. The United States is not a Christian nation, because Christians wouldn’t act like that. 12. There are very few standards in this country which are worth a man’s respect. 13. Popular culture as seen in films and comic books is created by “very ill people.” 14. If America doesn’t use “that energy” (the energy of young African Americans), then that energy will destroy America.
