Presentation transcript:

Aim: What are the characteristics of our Biome? Six levels of organization Biosphere-The Biosphere consists of land, water and air Biome – 10 different Biomes dependent on latitude (altitude), and climate (precipitation and temperature) Ecosystem – collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving, or physical environment. Communities-different populations of organisms that live together in a defined area. Population-a group of organisms that belong to the same species and live in the same area Individuals of the same species can breed and produce fertile offspring.

The Major Biomes Where are we? We are going to focus on one of these today – the Biome where we live.

Temperate Deciduous Forests Climate – rain, temperature Soil Trees – predominant Animals Invertebrates Deciduous – leaves fall The greatest concentration of animals is on and just below the forest floor. Around the world, most of the original forests have been logged, with only scattered remnants left today.

Task: determine the name of the temperate deciduous forest we live in Group 1 – climate data Group 2 & 3 – soil data (pH, fertility) Group 4 – color of soil and pH Group 5 – TREE IDENTIFICATION Group 6 – Animals Group 7 – Soil organisms 10 minutes to do these activities

Climate Data is an important factor for the Biome Precipitation and Temperature are important factors for the Biome. Soil is another important component that determines what plants can grow in any particular location.
