Course Description zOperating system is responsible for bridging the gap between applications and hardware. zCS330 is intended as a general introduction to operating system concepts. It covers the basic concepts of Operating system, Design, implementation, and management of system resources.

Course Objectives zThe purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of an operating system. Some of the main concepts that will be covered are: yhistory of OS, ycomputer & OS System Structures, yprocess synchronization, yCPU Scheduling, yMemory Management, yVirtual Memory.

Attendance Policies zYou are expected to be in class for every class session and to be on time. zStudents that regularly come to class 10 minutes late will be marked absent. zStudents that are regularly absent will be given DN warnings. (See DN Warning Flyer). zPoor and/or failing grades are directly correlated to your attendance habits. Therefore, attendance will be taken each class, and you are expected to be punctual, be attentive, and attend the entire class period.

Other Policies zCourse website should be checked frequently for latest news and course materials. zStudents should read from the textbook. zLate assignments will be penalized. zAll assigned work must be completed individually unless stated otherwise. Copying anyone else’s work will result in a score of zero for all participating students.

Pop-up quizzes (5%) zStudents must regularly come to class to participate in class activities and discussions zNot to miss any pop quiz.

Homework (5%) zExercise works will be given at the end of the every 2 chapters. Apply the concepts what you will be learning into those problems.

Quizzes (10%) zStudents will have the opportunity to take 2 quizzes during the term.  There will be no makeup quizzes.

Major Exam & Final Exam zMid Term Exams is worth 15%. zNo Make-Exams will be performed. zFinal exam is worth 40%. The final exam will be comprehensive (i.e., will include all the chapters discussed during the term).

Research Assignments (10%) zStudents are required to summarize the main points of some selected chapters / select any IS topic and present it. zGroup project worth 10%

How to Study for this Course zRead the chapter before and after class. z There are many topics covered in the book, but not the lectures. z There are many details and examples in the book zThink critically – ask questions, make notes, and reflect on material.
