Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Physics 122 ! Welcome to Physics 122 ! Here are today's announcements. (Tues. 18 Aug.) Instructor: Paul Arendt (that's me). Office: Workman 305 (two floors nearly directly up from this room); office phone is Please make sure you get a copy of the syllabus today. NO LABS this week! Labs begin next week. Recitation: does not meet for our sections this week; they will also begin next week. First tasks: Obtain an iClicker and bring it to class every day. Read chapter 23 for Thursday. Set up a Mastering Physics account and do the practice problems if it's new to you.

iClicker Website: (Visit this site to register. You will need the clicker ID number on the BACK of your clicker.) Online HW: Make sure your license is for our book!! When prompted for the COURSE ID, enter MPARENDT122FALL15. Please be sure to enter this EXACTLY, or you may enroll in the wrong course, which will truly cause your instructor to cry.

Sample iClicker question: Did you bring an iClicker to class today? (a) Yes (b) No (c) Maybe (d) I'm not sure. (e) 42

Light Reflection: Diffuse vs. Specular Notice that the angle reflected equals the angle in! We'll see why shortly.

Images from flat mirrors: always on the other side, the same size, and right-side-up.

Curved mirrors have more possibilities. Here, a parabola shape reflects parallel rays (from an object that's very far away) all to the same point, called the focal point of the mirror.

Reminder (or announcement, if you came in a bit late...): No Labs until next week! No recitations until next week!

Electromagnetism pre-test: please... Use a number 2 pencil Fill in your student ID (and the number bubbles below as well!). Name is optional. Fill in test form “A.” Leave the “Exam Number” blank. Subject = “Phys. 122” Do your best, but guess if you need to! A poor score will not affect your grade; we haven't yet gone over this material, and the exam is only used for assessment. So, credit is just for taking the exam. Turn into the envelope appropriate for your section! (Class is over after that – see you Thursday!!)
