Course Description Teaching and Managing Learners at Secondary/JC Level – A Core Module Content Understand yourself as a classroom teacher Understand the diverse learners and their differentiated learning needs Manage classroom environments and students’ behaviour Manage teaching and learning activities In this course, participants will learn about the realities of today’s classroom and provide them with the skills and teaching competencies that would help them build a sense of community and become more relevant and equipped to meet the needs of learners of Secondary and Junior College level classroom in the local context. Participants would likewise gain a better understanding of how to create productive and supportive learning environment in the secondary level setting and have an appreciation of how all these pedagogical tools seamlessly blend into the Skillful Teaching Framework and other key NIE/MOE initiatives.

Tutorial Groups This is arranged by Office of Teacher Education (OTE). Please check which tutorial group (TG) you are in using the NIE Student Portal at least one day before your first tutorial. On the first day of your tutorial, check whether your name is in the attendance list prepared by the tutor to ensure that you are in the correct tutorial room. Email the course coordinator if you encounter any problems.

All classes will start from the week of August 10th 2015 (Monday) even though some of you may have received timetables that reflect the starting date as August 17th 2014 (Monday) Since August 10th 2015 is a public holiday (National Day holiday), there will be make-up sessions Tutorial groups that have classes on that particular Monday will be informed by your tutors via email & announcement on Blackboard about their make-up session for August 10th 2015

Take Note The classroom environment is fluid in nature. The course does not intend to provide you with a ‘recipe book’ of classroom management strategies which you can use straightaway for every day situations in your classrooms. You will have to adapt and apply the classroom management principles that you will learn in this course to the situations that you will encounter in your classrooms in the future.
