Ernest Hemingway  Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer in the twentieth century, and for his efforts he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in  Ernest Hemingway was known for his tough, terse prose, and wrote short, declarative sentences.

Protagonist Character  Jake Barnes– He is the narrator of the book, he is a wealthy American writer. He lives in Paris, and he stands apart because we has know direct experience of WWl. He is also Jewish, and a non veteran.

Antagonist Characters Lady Brett Ashley – She is a beautiful British socialite. She is waiting for her husband, and waiting for a devorce. She is in love with Jack, and is having an affair with many men. She isn’t happy with her life.

Favorite Character  Robert Cohn because he was in a Jewish family, that was being put down at the time. He rampant anti-semitism. He had a hard life and learned boxing the hard and painful way and it counteracted the feeling of his shyness.

Exposition  The Characters are all just bored of life, they want to explore a new place.  They wanted to go somewhere that they could get away for awhile.

Rising Action  Jake, Brett and all their friends go see how it would be to live in Paris. Jake introduces Brett to Robert Cohn. Brett and Cohn have an affair. Cohn follows Brett to Pamplona.

Climax  Every different character in the book is mad at each other because everyone has had an affair with the same girl.  They all are mad and angry with each other and what they have done.

Falling Action  Jake decides to leave Spain. Brett tells and convinces Jake to come and rescue her in Madrid after forcing Pedro Romero to leave her there.

Resolution  Everyone ends up on good terms, likes each others company.  Moves down to Pamplona, Spain. Finds better spots and resources down there.

Setting  It all begins in Paris, France. Then it eventually moves to Pamplona, Spain. Then continues in Madrid Spain.

Themes  The aimlessly lost in there overall direction.  Male insecurity  The destructiveness of all the affairs.

Rating  I liked the book in some ways, some ways the book was super confusing, it is a tough book to read. And weird at times. I had to read some parts over and over. But I would give it a 5 overall.

Alcoholism  I picked alcoholism because I think that it is a real bad problem that affects everyone and needs to be stopped.
