Emotional Intelligence and Reflective Practice Success in Sport

 To introduce the benefits of emotional intelligence and reflective practice  To examine the role of one emotional intelligence model  To associate emotional intelligence and reflective practice with applied sports performance  To outline how emotional intelligence and reflective practice can enhance performance levels Aims and Objectives

 Coaches who exhibit higher levels of emotional intelligence are most likely to lead performers to increased success  As a trained skill engagement with emotional intelligence facilitates performance levels  Performance levels can be enhanced through facilitated support and guidance Emotional Intelligence & Performance

Theoretical Output  Self-Awareness – build self-awareness in thinking and action(s)  Self-Management of Emotion - manage emotion(s) of oneself and others  Empathy - apply understanding of performer needs  Increase Motivation – increase motivation levels to engage transferable life situations  Manage Relationships – implement strategies that facilitate effective relationships in coaching practice

 Self-management is the ability of the coach to manage own emotions in order to support performers  Assess your ability to manage emotion during intense pressure  Maintaining a reflective log is important as it will enable you to track your emotions over a season  Review your reflective log continuously to assess its effectiveness in managing emotions Self-Management of Emotion

 To be able to understand an individual by putting yourself in their shoes  Assessing the needs of individuals to make performance levels more effective  Identify and assess empathy towards a range of situations  Use mirror images to think and understand what the other person is going through Empathy

 Emotional intelligence and reflective practice are useful concepts that are purposeful to both sports performance and everyday life situations  The ability to manage and regulate your emotions can be the key to a successful career  The practice of enhancing emotional intelligence must be through an evolving process that should involve reflective practice  Setting up workshops and seminars is best practice to raise awareness of emotional intelligence and reflective practice  Effective results are possible through robust engagement Summary
