A SEMINAR ON BLU - RAY DISC

CONTENTS Introduction Blu - ray Disc Characteristics Blu - ray Disc Applications Blu - ray Disc Manufacturers Blu - ray Disc & DVD Blu - ray Disc & HD - DVD Movie Distributions Format, Video & Data Storage Supporting Companies Important Features

INTRODUCTION Increasing demand for high capacity data storage device. In 80s, CD with 650 MB storage capacity. In 90s, DVD with 4.7 to 9 GB storage capacity. High Definition Video demanded for new solution. Blu - ray Disc with 25-30 GB capacity having same factors as CD and DVD has become a solution to this demand. Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. As it uses a blue laser for read & write operation, it’s named as a “Blu - ray Disc”.

BLU - RAY DISC CHARACTERISTICS Blu- ray Disc has : Broadest industry support by leading Hardware Manufacturers & major Blank Media Manufacturers. Lifespan of at least 10 to 15 years. Strongest Content Protection schemes. Much strong resistance against scratches and fingerprints. Speed of Recording - 36 Mbps which take 1 hr & 33 min to record 25 GB. * 2x & 8x speed also may be achieved. Cost : Require a nominal investment in advance. But for mass product cost may be less. Highest capacity of any consumer media format.

BLU - RAY DISC APPLICATIONS High Definition Television Recording. High Definition Video Distribution. High Definition Camcorder Archiving. Mass Data Storage. Digital Asset Management & Professional Storage.

BLU - RAY DISC MANUFACTURERS Consumer Electronics Manufacturers. PC and PC Peripheral Manufacturers. Media Manufacturers. Content Providers.

BLU - RAY DISC & DVD Parameters BD DVD Storage capacity - Single Layer - Dual Layer 25 GB 50 GB 4.7 GB 9.4 GB Laser wavelength 405 nm 650 nm Numerical aperture (NA) 0.85 0.60 Protection layer 0.1 mm 0.6 mm Data transfer rate 36 Mbps 11.08 Mbps Video compression MPEG-2 MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1

BLU - RAY DISC & DVD Beam spots for Read & Write Operation Track Pitch Pit Length Storage Density

BLU - RAY DISC & HD - DVD Parameters BD HD - DVD Storage capacity - Single-layer - Dual-layer 25 GB 50 GB 15 GB 30 GB Laser wavelength 405 nm Numerical aperture (NA) 0.85 0.65 Protection layer 0.1 mm 0.6 mm Data transfer rate 36 Mbps Video compression MPEG-2 MPEG-4 AVC VC-1

FORMAT Blu-ray Disc variants : * BD R - Blu-ray Disc Recordable * BD RE - Blu-ray Disc Rewritable * BD ROM - Blu-ray Disc Read Only Memory Capacity : * Single-layer disc - 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB. * Dual-layer disc - 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB. There's also research going on to add more layers for 100 GB – 200 GB discs Blu-ray Disc products play DVD & CD . Blu-ray Disc products record DVD & CD : Expected that most BD PC drives will support the recording of CD, DVD & BD. DVD player cann’t play Blu-ray Disc : * Lack of the advanced technology to decode the HD picture from a BD. * Use of red laser to read.

BLU - RAY DISC FOR VEDIO Quatlity : BD offers HDTV video quality that far surpasses any other medium or broadcast format & supports other video formats, standard definition TV. Capacity : 25GB disc can record over 2 hours of HDTV or about 13 hours of SDTV. Recording functionality : Blu-ray Disc products are likely to offer a recording function. SDTV plays Blu-ray Disc : Pre-recorded Blu-ray Disc titles will play on any standard definition TV set & Blu-ray Disc recorder can also record SD video.

BLU - RAY DISC & DATA STORAGE Comparision of capacity of a Blu-ray Disc : BD with 50 GB = 10 recordable DVDs (5 Dual Layer DVDs) = 70 recordable CDs. Kind of data for storage : Any form of data including text documents, images, video/audio files. PC records video to a Blu-ray Disc : With appropriate software, you can edit SD or HD video and then record it to a Blu-ray Disc. High Definition Movie Releases : * Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM * Buena Vista Home Entertainment * Lionsgate Home Entertainment * Paramount Home Entertainment * Warner Bros. * Eagle Rock Entertainment * TBS/Angel Seekers * Asmik Ace Entertainment, Inc. * Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

SUPPORTING COMPANIES Supporting Companies : The Blu-ray Disc Association has member companies from the CE, IT, BDF, media and software industries. * Hitachi, Ltd. * LG Electronics Inc. Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. * Mitsubishi Electric Corporation * Pioneer Corporation * Royal Philips Electronics * Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. * Sharp Corporation * Sony Corporation * TDK Corporation * Thomson Multimedia

PRODUCTS Blu-ray Disc products currently available, or announced for introduction in the near future, are as under : BD Video Recorders/Players : * Panasonic DMR-E700BD (Japan) * Philips BDP9000 * Pioneer BDP-HD1 (USA) * Samsung BD-P1000 (USA) * Sharp BD-HD100 (Japan) * Sony BDZ-S77 (Japan) BDP-S1 (USA) BD Drives for PCs : * Philips SPD7000 * Pioneer BDR-101A (USA)

PRODUCTS BD Blank Media : * Fuji Film BD RE (Japan) * Maxell BD RE (Japan) * Panasonic BD RE (Japan) * Sony BD RE (Japan) * TDK BD RE (Japan)

BLU – RAY DISC REPLACING VHS It's the expectation that the Blu-ray Disc will replace VHS. It also offers a lot of new innovative features not possible with a traditional VCR: * Random access * Searching * Create playlists, change the order of recorded programs & editrecordedvideo  * Automatically find an empty space to avoid recording over programs  * Simultaneous recording and playback of video * Enhanced interactivity * Broadband enabled * Improved picture, ability to record HDTV * Improved sound, ability to record surround sound

DISADVANTAGES Because the recording layer in a Blu-ray disc is 0.1 mm below the surface on the top of a 1.1 mm substrate, this disc will require a new production line. The Blu-Ray format includes 3 protections against piracy, while the HD-DVD is based on the DRM protection system, which authorizes local transfers.
