BEGINNING MULTIPLICATION BASIC FACTS 0 - 4

Multiplication is REPEATED ADDITION. It is a shortcut to skip counting. The first number in the problem tells you how many sets you have. The second number tells you how many elements or objects are in each set.

In the problem 2 X 3 The 2 shows you that you have 2 sets. The 3 tells you that there are 3 elements or objects in each set.

If you have 2 sets with 3 elements or objects in each set you will have a total of 6 objects or elements. SO… 2 X 3 = 6

Let’s try some.

1 X 2

1 set 2 elements in the set 1 X 2

3 X 1

3 sets 1 element in each set 3 x 1

1 X 0

There are NO elements In this set! This set is EMPTY! ZERO ELEMENTS 0

0 X 4

There is NO set to put elements in. Zero sets = Zero 0

1 X 3

1 set 3 elements in the set 1 X 3

2 X 2

2 sets 2 elements in each 2 x 2

0 X 1

No set. No set to put elements in. Zero times # always = zero 0 x 1

2 X 1

2 x 1

3 X 2
