RTI IS DIFFERENT

WHY IS RTI DIFFERENT? WHY IS RTI DIFFERENT? Is NotIs An instructional programA framework to implement effective practices A group of students that leaves your room for extra instruction A system of matching resources to each individuals student’s needs Possible to implement aloneA collaborative effort The same for every schoolUniquely designed for each building A special ed, a general ed, a Title 1, a Talented and Gifted initiative An “Every” Education Initiative An educational fadA systematic method for delivering instruction, based on research and effective large scale implementation

D I F F E R E N T  Data  Individual Needs  Focus  Families  Engaging Instruction  Responding  Everyone (Not just special education or Title)  Never Ending  Teaming

D ata  Core Instruction – The of RTI  Decision Rules – Is this intervention working or not? How do you know?  Triangulate your Data  What does the data around your implementation look like?

I ndividual needs If we aren’t responding to the needs of individual children each day then what are we doing? What is the role of the teacher? What is the role of the administrator? What is the role of the specialists?

F ocus  Systems level thinking – NOT the squeaky wheel.  Direct the resources to support students  Time is the variable – How do we catch them up?  How can we improve instruction?

F amilies Family Involvement vs. Family Engagement  Shared responsibility in which we engage families in meaningful ways to support learning and development.  Who are the families in your school that are NOT engaged? Do they have children who are struggling learners?  What are you doing as a system to connect with all families in a manner that respects their individual differences?

Everyone  All Students  All Staff Any Questions??

R esponding systematically  “If the leader comes on too strong, the culture will rebel (and guess who is leaving town – cultures don’t leave town.” – Michael Fullan  Classroom Response  Team Response  Building Response

E ngaging instruction Effective +Efficient = Engaging Have you communicated your instructional expectations? Do you monitor those expectations? Do you give explicit feedback?

N ever ending  Cutting Edge  Constantly evolving  Stay on top of the research  Implement and then Innovate

Teams Take two minutes of private think time and record every team meeting you have been involved in since the beginning of school? GO! Did you have the school decision maker at each meeting? Did you have a clear agenda with everyone knowing why you were there? Do you know what decisions were made and who was responsible for ensuring all decisions were followed through on? How do your team processes ensure you ACT and not REACT?
