3 Why Do You Need To Know This?  Rates are important because they are used to compare quantities with different units.  Rates can be used in a variety of ways and can be found many places in the real world.

4 Vocabulary  Rate—Ratio that compares quantities with different kinds of units.  Unit Rate—Rate with a denominator of 1.
