ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 2 The ViennaMiddleSchool is a school for all children.  Specially trained teachers who are familiar with the transition phase from primary school accompany pupils during their transition to the VMS.  Pupil enrolment does not depend on final report card marks from primary school.  All pupils from one primary school class can move on together to the VMS.

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 3 The ViennaMiddleSchool is a modern achievement-oriented school.  Talents will be fostered in Achievement Courses: Special Training Courses help pupils catch up, A solid learning base will be achieved. In Extension Courses special gifts and talents are supported.  Teaching is based on the curricula of the Austrian Grammar School.  Whoever wants to can learn two modern languages.  German, Maths and English will be divided into core and extension material.

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 4 The ViennaMiddleSchool has Class-Teacher Teams.  At the VMS, teachers from Secondary Modern and Secondary Grammar Schools teach together.  Special Education Needs (SEN) teachers are an integral part of the Class-Teacher Teams in Inclusion Classes.  Primary school teachers support pupils in their new start at the VMS (5th Grade).

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 5 The ViennaMiddleSchool respects and supports individual pupil differences.  English will be partly used as a language of instruction.  Particular care will be given to individual pupil differences through differentiated and individualised teaching.  Learning-Coaching-Sessions help pupils plan their learning week.  Multilingualism is perceived as positive and will be fostered.

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 6 The ViennaMiddleSchool offers more than just normal education.  Support and help with learning outside of normal lessons makes private tuition unnecessary.  A voluntary whole-day programme offers learning help and meaningful leisure activities.  An ‘Arrival Phase’ in the morning shows pupils that they are welcome at school even before lessons begin.  A joint start to the week’s learning with a Learning- Coaching-Session helps pupils plan their individual learning goals.

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 7 The ViennaMiddleSchool enables easier transition to any type of upper secondary education.  The final report card shows that pupils are qualified to move on to any upper secondary school.  Advice and support at the VMS starts already in the 4th Grade of primary school and continues through to 9th Grade.  An individual statement of achievement provides orientation regarding the next steps in the academic career.

ViennaMiddleSchool WienerMittelSchule – Pädagogische Elemente - Oktober 2008, Folie 8 The ViennaMiddleSchool will start with classes in different districts.  Further details are immediately available by calling the ‘Vienna Middle School’ hotline (Tel ).  The VMS will start at various Grammar and Compulsory Schools in the academic year  Details of the schools will be published by 1 December.  The schools will offer parents individual counselling during the enrolment talks.
