Any living thing is an organism What makes a living thing a living thing?

6 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE All living things have cellular organization, contain similar chemicals, use energy, grow and develop, respond to their surroundings, and reproduce.

Cellular Organization The cell is the basic unit of structure and function Unicellular Organisms are composed of a single cell. Example: Bacteria Multicellular organisms are composed of many cells. Example: YOU (nerve cells, muscle cells)

Multicellular Organization

Tissue Group of cells that carry out a specific function Examples: –Nerve tissue –Muscle tissue

Organ Several types of tissues that interact to perform a specific function

Organ system Groups of organs that work together to perform a set of related tasks Could not survive without each other

Levels of Organization cells tissues Organ Organ System ORGANISM

Daily Question 3/9/15 In your daily question book, try to write down all six of the characteristics of life. Do not use your notes or your book. With each characteristic please give one example of what you do to represent that characteristic.

Most abundant chemical is water Carbohydrates are the energy source Proteins and lipids are the building materials of a cell Nucleic acids are the genetic material, the chemical instructions that direct the cell

Daily Question 3/10/2015 Pick up the worksheet on the front table. Complete both sides of the food chain worksheet. About 3 minutes after the bell rings we will go over it. If you have your interim signed and ready to turn in, place it on your desk. I will be around to pick it up.

Energy use…. …cells use energy to do everything… …like grow and repair injured parts.

Growth and Development Growth is the process of getting larger Development is the process of change that occurs during an organism ’ s life to produce a more complex organism

A change in an organism ’ s surroundings that causes the organism to react is called a stimulus An organism reacts with a response, an action or change in behavior What are your responses to some stimuli?

Reproduction Reproduce = to produce offspring that are similar to the parent

Daily Question 3/11/2015 Please pick up the worksheet on the front table. Please start with page 28 (page number at the bottom) and then go on to the back. If you have a signed interim, place it beside you so that I can pick it up. We will be going over this in about 5 minutes.

Life Comes From Life Spontaneous Generation is the mistaken idea that living things arise from non-living sources. Lewis Pastuer Francesco Redi

The Needs of Living Things Living things must satisfy their basic needs for energy, water, living space and stable internal conditions. energy water living space stable internal conditions.

Energy Autotrophs – Organisms that make their own food/capture energy from the sun. Heterotrophs- Organisms that cannot make their own food/ get energy from the sun indirectly. needs

Water Water All living things need water to survive Water is needed to obtain chemicals from their surroundings, break down food, grow, move substances within their bodies and reproduce. Water dissolves more substance on Earth. needs

Living Space Organisms need a place to get food, water and find shelter. Organisms can either share or compete with each other for living space. needs

Stable Internal Conditions Homeostasis Homeostasis is the process by which an organism ’ s internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. needs
