Major power converter issues for the restart of PS & SPS machines and their experimental areas in 2006 Jean-Paul BURNET for AB/PO PS&SPS days January 2006 Principal changes to power converter for the restart of PS & SPS machines and their experimental areas in 2006

Two mains subjects: system modifications, repairs and upgrades changes to AB/PO support for Accelerator Operations Two main topics: System modifications, repairs and upgrades Changes to AB/PO support for accelerator operations Two main topics: System modifications, repairs and upgrades Changes to AB/PO support for accelerator operations

JP BURNET3 System modifications, repairs and upgrades LINAC2 14 power converter replacements for dipole magnets Power converter type:MINIDISCAP ±20A / 600V (capacitor discharge) Identical to power converter for the injection line steering PSB No change for operation LTB.DHZ10LBE.DHZ10LTL.DHZ10LTE.DHZ10 LTB.DVT10LBE.DVT10LTL.DHZ10LTE.DVT10 LTB.DHZ20 LTB.DVT20 LTB.DHZ30 LTB.DVT30 LTB.DHZ40 LTB.DVT40 Control: - MIL 1553 (idem previous power converters) -Timing TG8: FW Forewarning W Warning ST Start ME Measure ( beam) - NAOS

JP BURNET4 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PSB 10 power converter replacements for dipoles BTY Line (to ISOLDE) Power converter type:MINIDISCAP +/-20A / 600V (capacitor discharge) Identical to other dipoles in BTY line No change for operation BTY.DHZ118BTY.DVT118 BTY.DHZ124BTY.DVT124 BTY.DHZ152BTY.DVT152 BTY.DHZ201BTY.DVT201 BTY.DHZ303BTY.DVT303 Installed in racks 535, 536 BCER Control: - MIL 1553 (old power supplies: ST single transceiver) -Timing TG8: FW Forewarning W Warning ST Start ME Measure (beam) - NAOS

JP BURNET5 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PSB 16 new 4 quadrants switch-mode power converters. Same type as for LEIR with full range current control including 0A. BTY.QFO 179±150A / ±50V BTM.QNO 05±250A / ±50V BTM.QNO 10 BTM.QNO Spare 8 * QSTRIP ±100A / ±100V + 1 spare 4  BDL ±50A / ±200V + 1 spare We are a little bit late on this project but we are confident to be on time! Control: - MIL 1553 (old power supplies: ST single transceiver) - NAOS

JP BURNET6 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PSB main power converter Replacement of MCR “Grounding key” system by a software Veto (like PS machine) Veto will permit or not to pulse the PSB Not enough to work on magnets => consignation required Regulation upgrade A new digital regulation will be tested at the start-up The goal is to improve the current stability and reproducibility of the converter for the LHC beam If the results are better than with the previous regulation, it may be used in operation. To be discuss in March with M. BENEDIKT Swap from new to old regulation in less than 1 hour

JP BURNET7 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PS main power converter Earth fault on the rotor of the generator during 2004 run due to a fan blade

JP BURNET8 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PS main power converter The motor and generator rotors were replaced by their spares in 2005 The spare rotors are the original ones (1969) The spares are unused since 1975 ~ Mechanically and electrically tested at no load without any problem First tests with magnets in February!!! The broken rotor will be repaired at CERN by SIEMENS. This shall be done for July. In case of trouble, a rotor replacement required at least 1 month. Many others preventive maintenance works had been done on auxiliaries equipments (transformer, rheostat, voltage suppressor…) and will not affect operation.

JP BURNET9 System modifications, repairs and upgrades PS PI.SMH 26 injection ions from LEIR New power converter 16.5 kA / 1.7 kV for new injection septum magnet Capacitors discharge type with third harmonic and active filter, installed in bat. 367 PR.BSW 26 for ions in PS New power converter 30A / 100V. 2 magnets in series type 205 (section 22 and 30). Capacitors discharge type, installed in bat. 365 PR.SMH57 New switch-mode power converter 10 kA / 8V (5 * 2kA in //, LHC type) Replaces the old thyristor + linear transistor converter. Identical performance and no change for operation. PR.SMH61 New switch-mode power converter 1600A / 16V (2 * 2kA / 8V in series) Same remarks as for SMH57. PFW no change! New PFW with 5-current mode will be commissioned in 2007.

JP BURNET10 System modifications, repairs and upgrades All BTRAIN systems are now under AT/MTM responsibility!!! LEIR, BOOSTER, PS, AD, SPS Contact : Didier CORNUET AT/MTM/RM See talk Thursday 8:30

JP BURNET11 System modifications, repairs and upgrades TT2 6 new thyristor converter for the new quadruples of the TT2 line. Renovated power converters as for LEIR machine. 4 converters have a bleeder system to permit the operate at zero current. ConvertersTypeImaxImin Umax F16.QDE163RB10CBLb300A-10A250V F16.QDE207RB10CBLb450A-10A250V F16.QDE210RB10CBL400A40A250V F16.QDE213RB10CBLb400A-10A250V F16.QFO215R14CBL500A50A300V F16.QDE217RB10CBLb 300A-10A250V Control: -MIL NAOS

JP BURNET13 System modifications, repairs and upgrades SPS SPS main power converters - A new acquisition system for the DCCT will be tested at start-up but it probably can’t be used before the migration of the ROCS under FESA - Michel JONKER (AB/CO) will manage the software modification SPS north experimental area - The tests of the new junction crate based on FESA will be done before the start-up - The old junction crate, PCA, CAMAC and NODAL will be used for 2006 operation - The operation may be affected by the water leaks of the BA80 roof if no work is done before the start-up!!!

Two mains subjects: system modifications, repairs and upgrades changes to AB/PO support for Accelerator Operations Second topic Changes to AB/PO support for accelerator operations Second topic Changes to AB/PO support for accelerator operations

JP BURNET15 Changes to AB/PO operation support 2004 One standby service for PS complex covered by CERN Staff One standby service for SPS including experimental areas covered by First Line contract (S077) 2005 One standby service for PS complex covered by FSU AB11 Up to 2005, the trend was to externalize all the standby services (PS + SPS) due to lack of resources. With the end of LHC construction and new posts, PO staff can now assume the standby services for LHC injectors and LHC ring One standby service for the LHC injectors covered by CERN Staff One standby service for the experimental areas covered by FSU AB One more standby service for LHC ring and experiments will start
