Research questions To what extent are practitioners’ actions affected by their own religious beliefs? In what ways can practitioners’ own religious beliefs influence their social work practice? Religious Beliefs and Social Work Research Questions

Some practitioners considered practicing SW is a “calling from God”. (Worker A & B) Religious teaching (e.g. Buddhist teaching of “non-attachment”) had been used in helping clients. Other findings: It seems common that they could not articulate clearly how their religious beliefs affected their practices. Their practices were still based on reason, instead of “divinely inspired ideas”. Implications For SW Education: SW teachers and students may need to talk their religions openly in SW training. For SW Practice: Practitioners should make explicit the possible influences of their religious beliefs on their practices.
