Financial Aid TRAINing Presented by: Kimberly Stanbridge Lansing Community College (LCC) Financial Aid Department Friday, September 25, 2015

Financial Aid TRAINing All aboard! ….whether you like it or not. Training is an experience, not an obligation. Keepin’ it real. (a.k.a. relevant) Let’s do some math.

All aboard! …whether you like it or not.

Everyone is on board. Choose your own adventure.

Full steam ahead!

Bringing up the rear…

Chugging along, dangerously…

Moving toward the same destination…

Training is an experience, not an obligation.

No one invests in negative returns… Invest in your people first. Meet their needs, and they will invest in yours.

Don’t force it… It’s 2015 – the age of information overload – We know the buzz words – We know what’s being said out of obligation When we’re forced to attend training, we know most people would rather keep working It’s 2015 – let’s get creative – Think for yourself – Think for those around you Think of something new How does your team learn best? NEVER do it because it is what has always done Most people do not want to be told what to do. That does not change in the workplace.

Keepin’ it real. (a.k.a. relevant)

Keeping it relevant… It’s ok to train a few people at a time – Who is essential? – Who can spread the word? – Who is available? Delaying training until everyone in a large group is available is counterproductive.

Keeping it relevant… People have their own interpretation – What is real for one person, is not necessarily real for the next. – Training in smaller groups allows for more Q&A time. Even in a large group, plan for a lot of questions. If they don’t have time to ask, assumptions will be made. What do we know about assumptions??? – Sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re wrong.

Let’s do some math.

What was that about investment?

Video…

It ’ s hard to be 100% better than your competition, but you can be 1% better in 100 ways. ~ Rich Melman If 99.9% was acceptable : 880,000 credit cards in circulation will turn out to have incorrect card holder information on their magnetic strips. 22,000 checks from wrong bank accounts in the next 60 minutes 107 incorrect medical procedures will be performed by the end of the day today. One hour of unsafe drinking water per month

The 212 Principle Be the Difference

In a 212 workplace… We only speak well of ourselves. We only speak well of our organization. We only speak well of our competitors. We only speak well of our students.

Use CARE with your fellow Team Members

Communicate Appreciate Recognize Encourage

Top Three Employee Complaints 1. Inconsistent communication 2. Lack of clear strategy and goals 3. Poor accountability

Respondents in a national survey cited : 37% said they have a clear understanding of what their organization is trying to achieve and why 20% were enthusiastic about their team ’ s goals Only 15% feel their organization fully enables them Only 20% fully trusted their organization

Appreciate Notice your Team Members. Listen to your Team Members wants and needs. Respond in a timely fashion Say “ Thank you.”

Recognize 34% of respondents in a national survey cited “ limited recognition ” as the most common reason for leaving an employer 85% of today ’ s workforce feel under appreciated

Who to Recognize ? Commitment to service Sustained level of productivity Demonstrate a high degree of initiative Exceptional dependability Effective relations with others

Recognize People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel. ~ Maya Angelou

Encourage Educate. Support Growth. Encourage the Heart.

Caught being 212!

The Benefits of the “Caught being 212°” program Boost morale within the department Make employees feel appreciated and rewarded More satisfied students because they will often encounter 212° service Increase productivity and performance Keep employees engaged and committed Direct performance feedback provided for individuals Increased employee satisfaction and enjoyment of work Teamwork between employees will be enhanced Retention of quality employees will increase
