The American Revolution A war fought by the 13 colonies to gain their freedom from Great Britain by Mrs. Ward

The Stamp Act One event that led up to the American Revolution was the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act placed taxes on items like newspapers and pamphlets. Many patriots refused to buy items that were taxed. In 1766 the British Government ended the Stamp Act.

Patriots Colonists who were against being ruled by Britain were called patriots.

Loyalists Colonists who remained loyal to Britain. They fought on the side of the British.

The Battle of Saratoga The Battle of Saratoga was actually two battles. The Patriots won this battle when the British General, John Burgoyne, surrendered to American General Horatio Gates.

The Result The Patriots won the American Revolution. The 13 colonies were free to become the United States.
