Raising Awareness of and Rewarding Data Management Practices in RGE/EDGE Promotion Review

Overall Goals improve efficiency in data discovery, sharing and re-use for scientific research; assist the scientist in meeting the promotion requirement to demonstrate that research data has been used; and increase the visibility and better quantify the value of USGS research data products.

Data Policy Committee Goals Raise awareness of data management in interpretation of RGE/EDGE evaluation policies Document specific examples for interpretation by gathering data from researchers on current practices, “wish lists” and needs

Expectations of Researchers identify and conceptualize research needs; plan and conduct experiments and studies; collect, analyze, manage, and document data, results, and findings; transfer new information and technology to users; publish and disseminate results; review, evaluate, and apply research products; serve as peer reviewers; and keep abreast of and apply new information and technology.

Presentation to Panel 1.Definition of “good data management” 2.Examples of current practices – Interviews w/ RGE and EDGE scientists 3.Statistics/dollar figures on benefits

Questions for Researchers 1.What do you do now? -- Are there things that you do that make life easier for people who want to use the data you produce? 2.What would you like others to do? -- What do you wish other scientists would do to make it easier for you to use their data or share information? 3.What resources do you need? -- What resources do you need for data management planning and practice? (examples: training on data management planning, training on metadata creation, a "data manager" staff support person)
