Holes By: Louis Sachar

Pre-reading Predict the role of the following items in the novel: sneakers peach preserves sunflower seeds onion lipstick tube fish fossil box of stationery

Chapters 1-3 Describe the setting of the novel so far. This should be in paragraph form. Remember, the first sentence is an introductory sentence stating three facts. The second through fourth sentence describes the three facts (supporting sentences.) The last sentence should be the concluding sentence that restates the main idea.

Chapters 4-6 We have met the main character Stanley. How are you like him? How are you different from him? Write on paragraph about how you are like him, and write a second paragraph about how you are different. Make sure you use the paragraph form that I have taught you!

Chapters 11-13 Stanley was trying to decide whether to help X-Ray or be selfish. Then, he was discovered before he could decide. Why should he have been selfish? Why should he have given the object to X-Ray? Answer each question in a five sentence paragraph. (You should have two paragraphs.)

Chapter 24 What caused Mr. Sir’s swelling? What happened to the boy who asked about it? Why didn’t Stanley let Zero dig his hole? Why did Mr. Sir pour out Stanley’s water? How would you feel if you were in Stanley’s shoes?

Chapter 30 Why does Zero fight off Zigzag? Why do the adults think Zero is stupid? Is Zero stupid? Why don’t the adults stop Zero from leaving? Which character do you feel you can relate to most? Explain why!

Chapter 46 Why did Stanley and Zero have to be very still? Why did Mr. Sir begin to smoke again? Why did the Warden say that they would bury Zero’s body in a hole? Why did they think they would have bodies? What do you think “the woman” and A.G. mean? What would you do next if you were Stanley?

Chapter 47-49 How do you think the Warden relates to Kissin’ Kate Barlow story? Why can’t anyone find Zero’s files? Why would onion juice help keep lizards away? How did the lady know that Stanley was innocent? What kind of person is Mrs. Morengo? Describe her character traits.

Camp Green Lake T-Shirts If you’ve ever been to a summer camp, you probably came back with a T-shirt. Create a catchy slogan to represent Camp Green Lake and add appropriate artwork. Use white paper to create your rough design. Before painting, place construction paper inside to prevent bleeding through.
