Let’s talk about sex, baby…  Catalyst:  Label the missing organs

Objective By the end of today, SWBAT…  Describe the function of male/female reproductive organs  Describe the differences between male and female fertility

Question Box

Catalyst Review  Key Point #1: Different organs make up the male and female reproductive systems.

Male Reproductive Organs Testes Vas deferens Penis Urethra

Female Reproductive Organs Ovary Fallopian tubes (oviduct) Uterus Cervix Vagina Vulva

Pregnancy  Key Point #2: Men and women are fertile at different times  Fertile = able to become pregnant or cause a pregnancy  After puberty, men produce sperm every day, and can impregnate women at any time  Women go through a cycle that determines when they can get pregnant

Menstrual Cycle  Key Point #3: Women have day menstrual cycles Name of phaseLength of phasePurpose Follicular phase6-8 days Prepare for pregnancy by building thick uterine lining. Ovulationminutes Release egg. Luteal phase12-14 days Egg waits to be implanted. Menstrual phase4-5 days Shed uterine walls (“period”). Cramps.

Orgasm and Sex  Key Point #4: Orgasms help pregnancy to occur.  Male orgasms release ejaculate (a mix of sperm and fluids), into the vagina of women. Ejaculate must travel through the cervix and into the uterus for pregnancy to occur.  Female orgasms may help draw sperm through the cervix to help pregnancy.

 Name two organs of the male reproductive system.  What does the vas deferens do?  What does the penis do? ADD IT!!! If you can’t find the answer… Whiteboard Practice (GP)

 Name three organs of the female reproductive system.  What does the cervix do?  What does the ovary do? ADD IT!!! If you can’t find the answer… Whiteboard Practice (GP)

 When are men fertile?  When are women fertile? ADD IT!!! If you can’t find the answer… Whiteboard Practice (GP)

 What happens during the menstrual phase of a woman’s cycle?  What’s ovulation? ADD IT!!! If you can’t find the answer… Whiteboard Practice (GP)

 How does orgasm help pregnancy to occur? ADD IT!!! If you can’t find the answer… Whiteboard Practice (GP)

Independent Practice – Choose One  You are a sperm. Explain to your little sperm brother the path that he must go through in order to get to an egg and fertilize it.  You are an egg. Explain to your little egg sister what will happen when she is released from the ovaries. (Make sure she knows what will happen if she is not fertilized).

Key Point Wrap-Up  Key Point #1: Different organs make up the male and female reproductive systems.  Key Point #2: Men and women are fertile at different times  Key Point #3: Women have day menstrual cycles

Exit Question: Choose one Describe the path that a sperm cell takes, from creation to release from the body during orgasm. What happens during each of the phases of the menstrual cycle? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
