Why Context Embedded Instruction? According to Grassian and Kaplowitz (2001): –“Trying to teach IL in a vacuum is frustrating and counterproductive... Concepts only become understandable when presented in context” (p. 10). –“A seamless intertwining of ILI with all other forms of instruction... should be our ultimate goal” (p ). The skills related to accessing and evaluating information need to be developed within a relevant context for the student.

Context Embedded Instruction in Action What follows is a Power Point presentation aimed at students enrolled in a college film class currently working on a research project on German New Wave cinema The presentation intends to: –Inform students of how to access information relevant to their assignment –Help students to evaluate the quality of their research materials

Some Resources are Better Than Others... NEVERWikipedia is NEVER a good source of information –Professionals in the field do not have control over the entries –Anyone can edit a Wikipedia entry –There are numerous factual errors on the site... and you cannot be certain which entries have errors and which do not!

Be careful of which websites you consult –Not all “university” web pages are backed up by research... some are personal pages –Blogs often contain people’s unsupported opinions or distortions of facts, they are not always reliable resources –Remember: not all the information floating around the internet is correct or of high quality Ask yourself: “Would my professor use this resource in one of his/her research projects?”
