Context Embedded Instruction: An Approach to Teaching Accessing and Evaluating Information by Daffney Hillis LIBR Summer 2009

Why Context Embedded Instruction? According to Grassian and Kaplowitz (2001): –“Trying to teach IL in a vacuum is frustrating and counterproductive... Concepts only become understandable when presented in context” (p. 10). –“A seamless intertwining of ILI with all other forms of instruction... should be our ultimate goal” (p ). The skills related to accessing and evaluating information need to be developed within a relevant context for the student.

Context Embedded Instruction in Action What follows is a Power Point presentation aimed at students enrolled in a college film class currently working on a research project on German New Wave cinema The presentation intends to: –Inform students of how to access information relevant to their assignment –Help students to evaluate the quality of their research materials

German New Wave Cinema Resources FILM 100

First Steps Begin your German New Wave Cinema project by visiting the TV, Radio, Film & Theater Research Guide on the King Library’s webpage: es/sguide_subjectList.htm?subID=61&get Type=5 es/sguide_subjectList.htm?subID=61&get Type=5 –In the menu on the left hand side of the page are links that will be useful for your project

Journals & Articles Articles & DatabasesOn the TV, Film, Radio & Theater page, click on Articles & Databases in the menu at the left Film & TelevisionAt the top of the page click on the Film & Television link Film & Television Literature Index with Full Text –Click on Film & Television Literature Index with Full TextFilm & Television Literature Index with Full TextFilm & Television Literature Index with Full Text Database of full-text articles related exclusively to film and television Search the name of a director or a movie by typing it in the search box and clicking on “subject terms” –These results from these searches will be in “peer reviewed journals” These articles have been evaluated by professionals in that field for scholarly merit

Journals & Articles A search for the director Rainer Werner Fassbinder returns full-text results on: –His miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz and its release on DVD in 2007 –An article on Fassbinder’s Berlin –Articles on “New German Cinema” –Reviews of the director’s work Some of the results of your searches may not be in English!

Some Resources are Better Than Others... NEVERWikipedia is NEVER a good source of information –Professionals in the field do not have control over the entries –Anyone can edit a Wikipedia entry –There are numerous factual errors on the site... and you cannot be certain which entries have errors and which do not!

Some Resources are Better Than Others... Be careful of which websites you consult –Not all “university” web pages are backed up by research... some are personal pages –Blogs often contain people’s unsupported opinions or distortions of facts, they are not always reliable resources –Remember: not all the information floating around the internet is correct or of high quality Ask yourself: “Would my professor use this resource in one of his/her research projects?”
