This week we will cover many new civilizations!

Today we will focus on: Ancient India and Hinduism

India Hinduism In your notes, make a T chart about what do you know about these 2 things already?

What is the geography of India? India is surrounded in the north by the Himalayan Mountains Subcontinent Monsoons (seasonal winds) bring rain, depositing fertile silt

How do these two pictures contribute to farming? Do you think the Indus River floods? Why do you think the Indus River was important to Ancient India? The Himalayas are stretch so far they make India a subcontinent. How do these two pictures contribute to farming? Indus River was important for farming? The melted snow coming down the mountains created silt when it wet the soil

The Indus River is just as important for the beginning of civilization for India! Just like the Nile was essential to the beginning of civilization for Egypt!

Farming in Ancient India Farmers began planting around the Indus River in 6000 BC. This is 1,000 years before farming began in Egypt Farmers grew wheat, barley, beans, and sesame, along with the first rice, bananas, and black peppers Domesticated animals to plow fields and transport goods Built irrigation canals to bring water from river to their crops By 3000 BC towns formed along the river, 30 years later these would grow into mighty cities Farming in Ancient India

What was the Harappa Civilization? Located in the Indus River Valley What was the Harappa Civilization? S: Caste System P: Complex cities: example: Harappa & Mohenjo-Dara R: Hinduism I: Writing system T: Walls, sewer system, streets, wells E: agriculture, crafts, and trade (with Asia and Mesopotamia)

Now that we know the foundation of Ancient India…

What does the “R” stand for in S.P.R.I.T.E???

You guessed it! RELIGION!!!! What was the religion of Ancient India??? Right AGAIN!!!! You guessed it!

What is Hinduism? Started in India Oldest and most complex religion Sacred text: The Vedas Believes in: 1.karma: your new life is shaped by the actions in your old life 2. dharma: what you are supposed to do 3. reincarnation: pattern of birth, death, rebirth of soul; based on karma Follows the caste system

Can religion be the source of oppression?

The higher a person’s caste, the more benefits and luxuries they have Outlawed in 1948 in India still considered the proper way to stratify society. Born into your caste The Caste System

You will have a card placed on your back with your place in the caste system given to you and the descriptions of everyone’s role You will have to treat the other people in your group according to the sheet I give you You MUST remain silent unless told to speak…that’s the ONLY way this activity will work If someone asks you what their card says DO NOT TELL THEM! Activity #2

Activity 2 con’t… In your group you will have to answer the questions as a group…don’t for get to act accordingly Hand out worksheets and work on them as a group You have 2o minutes to answer the questions on the worksheet in your group!

Debrief of activity Why did I make you do this activity? How did it make you feel? Think about the people who have to go through this everyday…this is their life! Debrief of activity

The Caste System The creation of the caste system ranked society according to occupational status. Brahmins – priests Kshatriyas – soldiers, king-warrior class Vaishyas – merchants, farmers, laborers, craftspeople Harijahns – “untouchables” descendents of aboriginals, extremely poor and discriminated against http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD3HrIRPVh w
