If you haven’t, you need to do that now (tonight!) - Summer Work Quiz- Tuesday, Sept. 1 st (Test is open note) - You need to sign up for topic conferences. Come with the 2 topics you have come up with over the summer and your personal interests (in and outside of science). Make sure to be brainstorming ideas that are complex and have real world application. Sign up sheets will be posted on Thursday.

Homework: Get safety contract signed by parents! (Also a daily grade)

Lab Groups: - The people sitting at the same table as you are your lab partners for this six weeks. Your lab group is the letter at your table. - Seating arrangements and lab partners will change periodically.

Marshmallow Challenge: - 20 sticks of dry spaghetti - 1 yard of string - 1 yard of masking tape - 1 marshmallow

Rules: 1. Build the tallest freestanding structure 2. The entire marshmallow must be on top 3. Use as much of the kit as you want. 4. You may break up the spaghetti or cut the tape or string. 5. You cannot use the box the kit is in. 6. The challenge lasts 18 minutes.

- Your teachers will measure your structures. - One person in each group write your height on the data table on the board. - Then everybody go to your seat.

- How could you turn the Marshmallow Challenge into an experiment? - What are different variables you could test?

In this class, we will practice writing a lab report. One important part of writing a lab report is writing a detailed procedure (step-by-step instructions) for the experiment you are testing.

GroupHypothesis A and E Drinking coffee before a test will improve your grade. B and F Green light will cause a plant to grow more than a yellow light. C and G E. Coli bacteria grow fastest at 38 degrees Celcius. D and H Advil works the best at relieving a headache. I Brightly colored fish would reproduce slower than dull colored fish in a pond.

The person at the lowest seat number, explain your experiment to your group.
