Types of Reproduction.
Cells - The Basic Unit of Life
Genetics is the study of heredity.. Organisms resemble their parents because they inherit their genetic material from their parents.
Reproduction and Cell Division
Asexual & Sexual Reproduction. Asexual Reproduction  Type of reproduction in which a new organism is produced from ONE parent and the offspring is identical.
Heredity is the passing of traits from parent to offspring. Heredity is responsible for how you have your mother’s eyes and your father’s smile. Along.
 Sexual Reproduction – type of reproduction in which the genetic materials from two different cells combine, producing an offspring  Sperm – male sex.
Methods of Asexual Reproduction This is what it would look like if humans reproduced by fragmentation!
Methods of Reproduction Sexual and Asexual Reproduction.
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction Mitosis & Meiosis.
KEY CONCEPT Many organisms reproduce by cell division.
Asexual Reproduction. What is Reproduction?  Reproduction is the process in which organisms produce more of their own kind.  Asexual reproduction occurs.
KEY CONCEPT Many organisms reproduce by cell division.
Reproduction. Asexual Reproduction –Asexual Reproduction- Process by which a SINGLE organism produces offspring that have the same genetic material. –Binary.
SEXUAL & ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION INVOLVE CELL DIVISION ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION INVOLVES ONE PARENT: through binary fission, budding, & regeneration –One organism.

Asexual Reproduction Advantages and Disadvantages.
ASEXUAL and SEXUAL REPRODUCTION. Reproduction is the process of making offspring from one or two parents.
9/28 warm-up What is asexual reproduction What is sexual reproduction
Reproduction Introduction Asexual reproduction: 1. The prefix “A” comes from the Greek language and means without. 2.The term asexual means without to.
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction. Extra chromosomes allow all female lizards to reproduce without males  double their chromosomes twice before everything.
Creating Clones. In The House of the Scorpion and The X-Files episode ‘Eve’, the stories focus on human clones that are produced by reproductive cloning.
Asexual Reproduction. ASEXUAL vs. SEXUAL  Requires only one parent organism  Offspring genetically identical to parent (clones)  No specialized cells.

 How many parents are involved in the types of reproduction listed? ◦ Sexual Reproduction ◦ Asexual Reproduction.
Methods of Reproduction. Types of Reproduction There are two main ways in which reproduction occurs: –Asexual Reproduction –Sexual Reproduction.
A comparison…. Any form of reproduction in which the offspring are genetically identical to the parent A single parent grows a clone or copy of itself.

Reproductive System Basics Types of Reproduction Two Types of Reproduction Asexual: A single parent produces offspring genetically identical to itself. Single-celled organisms. BACTERIA Identical Offspring Original parent

More uniform offspring

Requires one parent

REGENERATION occurs when part of an organism grows to form other organisms that are often still connected to the original organism.

FRAGMENTATION occurs when the body of the parent breaks into distinct pieces, each of which can produce an offspring.

Planaria reproduce by fragmentation and regeneration

Starfish reproduce by fragmentation and regeneration

BUDDING occurs when a small part of the parent's body separates from the rest and develops into a new individual, eventually becoming an independent organism.

Yeast – a type of bacteria that you use in bread. Reproduce by budding.

Hydra – found in lakes and ponds. Reproduce by budding.

BINARY FISSION occurs when a cell simply grows larger, copies its DNA in genes and chromosomes, and then forms a cell membrane down the mid-section of the cell to form 2 new 'daughter' cells.

Amoeba reproduces by binary fission.

Bacteria reproduces by binary fission.

Reproductive System Basics Two Types of Reproduction Sexual: Offspring is produced by combining the genetics of two parents. Multicellular organisms.

Requires two parents

More genetic variation

Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction

Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction A single parent cell produces offspring that are exactly like the parent. Two parent cells join together and develop into a new individual Living things make other living things like themselves The new individual has the exact same traits as the parent Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction The new individual shares traits from both parents All organisms must reproduce in order for their kind to survive Most single celled organisms Most animals Humans Strawberry Plants; amoebas; coral

Asexual or Sexual ? Involves two parents.

Creates Genetically Diverse Offspring Asexual or Sexual ? Creates Genetically Diverse Offspring

Creates Genetically Identical Offspring Asexual or Sexual ? Creates Genetically Identical Offspring

Asexual or Sexual ? Ex: Animals

Single Celled Organisms Asexual or Sexual ? Single Celled Organisms

Involves only one parent. Asexual or Sexual ? Involves only one parent.

Example: Bacteria, Hydra & a Starfish Asexual or Sexual ? Example: Bacteria, Hydra & a Starfish

Multicellular Organisms Asexual or Sexual ? Multicellular Organisms

CLASSIFYING ORGANISMS Objective: Classify the following illustrations as either SEXUAL or ASEXUAL organisms.

Title: Bacteria

Title: Fetus

Title: Albino Spider & Alligator ALBINO= lack of normal pigments in the skin that give the organism it’s natural color. It is a genetic abnormality.

Title: ANTRHRAX Bacillus Anthrasis

Title: A Cat

Title: Hungry Lions

Title: Wrinkle-Face Bat

Title: Budding Yeast Cells

Title: Starfish (Regeneration of limb)

Title: Monkey

Title: Budding Hydra

Title: Aye-Aye (From Madagascar) Unique Characteristics= the Aye-Aye has long fingers that tap on the tree branch only to spear it’s prey. It has big ears to detect movement of its prey at night inside the tree.

Title: Sharks
