Introduction The focus of this unit plan is to identify the political and ideological differences between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. It will also help students realize how other nations were affected, and how that can be applied to the problems we face in the present.

Analyze Learners 11 th grade high school students Must have understanding of the end of WWII Not designed for honors classes or special needs classes, but can be adapted for either easily

Utilize Media and Materials Day 1: Students will be briefed on the state of international affairs following World War II and will be introduced to the idea of two super power nations. Students will also be divided into groups for their presentations that will be due at the end of the unit. Day 2: Communism vs. Capitalism: Define, compare, and contrast the two. Assign the students a paper focusing on the causes of the Cold War that will be collected after the movie 13 Days.

Utilize Media and Materials (Continued) Day 3: The Domino Theory and Containment: What were they? Why were they important to the Cold War? How did each of these theories contribute to problems and conflicts in countries outside of the United States and Russia? Day 4: Introduce the Cuban Missile Crisis and explain why it was significant.

Utilize Media and Materials (Continued) Day 5: Finish lectures on the Cuban Missile Crisis and assign interactive Think Quest web activity. Day 6 and 7: Show the film 13 Days, which focuses on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Collect the students’ papers on the causes of the Cold War on day 7. Day 8: Presentation day.
