Earth Observation in the Middle East and North Africa Region Claire A. Kfouri Sr. Water and Sanitation Specialist

MENA Key Facts Driest region of the world with large temporal and spatial variations in precipitation Climate change impacts projected to be significant Agriculture utilizes 85% of available water resources yet modest impact on economic growth Largest importers of cereals worldwide Over 70% of water resources originate outside political borders Inadequate data collection practices

But don’t despair.. Water and agriculture often high national priorities New solutions highly welcome Significant technical expertise within specialist institutions High appreciation for expertise of international specialist agencies Opportunity to work on some of the world’s most complex and historic water systems

So what can USG experts provide? Access to data and models Tried and tested applications in flood/drought modeling, ET mapping and climate change modeling Hands-on training Access to international network of experts Experience in translating outputs into impacts Advice on managing risk

And what can the Bank provide? Bring results/issues to political attention Policy advice (translating science into development impact) Regional connectivity Facilitate communications among stakeholders Potential financing within new/existing projects or with partner donors with-us-to-take-aim-at-water-insecurity
