What am I learning today? The Inequalities that exist in Education. Responses to inequalities by government and other organisations

Constitution Education is a universal right and it is the duty of the state to provide it. School is compulsory and free for 7-14 year olds. In rich states at least 95 per cent enrol. In poor ones per cent By the second year a quarter have dropped out

Inequalities in Education The main areas that inequalities exist in Education are : Literacy Attendance Enrolment Teaching

Illiteracy rates There is a rich world and a poor world when it comes to education. This can be demonstrated by comparing the illiteracy rates between the different regions in Brazil. Schools are ran by local government and rely on local funding.

Attendance There is also an inequality in education when it comes to attendance. Many children do not go to school. They have to earn money to support their families. Most young Brazilians don’t get a secondary education- only 33 per cent attend secondary school. Private schools exist in Brazil- for rich and well-off pupils. Private schools are well resourced and pupils are more likely to proceed to further education. Government money spent on public universities- whose students are mostly white and wealthy.

Bolsa Familia Introduced to reduce the number of Brazilian school age children working to support their family. The aim was to increase attendance especially for children coming from low income households. A grant was given to low income families- similar to EMA. We are going to watch a video clip about Child Labour in Brazil. Take notes on the types of work children are doing.

Teaching Teaching not a respected profession. Quality of teaching needs improved. Teachers not seen as important for the development of Brazil or as a means of improving the potential standard of living for millions of Brazilians.
