Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall
First, you need a computer with a USB port
Next, locate the Temperature Sensor Packet Some packets say PS 2125 other are labeled PS 2101
Remove the contents of the Temperature Sensor Packet (contains 2 main pieces) Temperature probe Interface Unit In the packet labelled: “PS 2125” the probe and interface unit are combined
Locate the USB LINK packet.
Remove the contents of the USB Packet: (contains 1 main piece labeled UBS link)
Plug the UBS LINK into the UBS port of the computer
(don’t worry it won’t break !!)
Hold the UPS Link in one hand...
Attach the Temperature Sensor Packet to the UBS Link at shown:
The two units are now connected together! Temperature Sensor Unit USB Link
Log on to the computer, Click the Pasco Icon on the desktop
The following message will appear. Then, click “Launch Data Studio”
The Data Studio Logo will (briefly) appear
Choose (in this example) Water Lab
Click Setup
Adjust your measurement period. (We used every 10 seconds in this example.)
When you are ready. Click Start. WATCH!
Your screen should look like this, before any data is recorded.
Phase Change Diagram An Interactive Approach
Set up your Bunsen Burner, ring, wire mesh, and ring stand as shown.
Place a beaker of ice on the ring stand as shown.
(The “old-fashioned” thermometer is optional).
Your set-up should now look like this.
Insert the Pasco temperature probe into the beaker and ice mixture. Turn on your Bunsen Burner.
Gradually you ice mixture should turn to water. Then, it should begin to boil.
NOTICE, OBSERVE, and RECORD what is happening on the computer screen !
Gradually the water in the beaker will begin to boil. Watch the computer display monitor.
Don’t forget to use your TONGS to remove the hot beaker from the ring stand !
Your graph will look something like this.
What is happening at the “pointed” position?
What phase is represented here?

The Temperature of Mr. “D”
Mr. “D” want to take his temperature. He sticks the Temperature Probe in his mouth. Of course Mr. “D” first wiped the probe with alcohol !
Every 10 seconds the Pasco Temperature probe recorded his body temperature.
After 30 seconds, Mr. “D’s” temperature was 35.5 degrees celsius (and still rising).
